Today, I want to share a recent concerning experience that has deeply affected a friend of mine, underscoring the pitfalls of internship bonds and the 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝. My friend recently completed an internship in a small financial technology company as part of his final semester college curriculum. However, what should have been a valuable learning experience turned into a nightmare due to unforeseen circumstances. Before commencing the internship, he had to sign a bond with the company, agreeing to a hefty sum of ₹1.5 lakhs. This bond committed him to a specific tenure, on account of a series of specialized product and behavioral trainings. Sadly, despite this commitment, my friend didn't receive any of the promised specialized training during the six-month internship period. Instead, he found himself burdened with overwhelming workloads and a severe lack of work-life balance. To compound matters, the stipend provided was a mere average of ₹18,000 per month, exacerbating his financial strain. What's more disheartening is that my friend had to pay the ₹1.5 lakh bond amount solely to obtain the internship certificate required for his college degree. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐦, 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 ₹𝟏.𝟓 𝐥𝐚𝐤𝐡𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞. It's disheartening to witness young talents coerced into such difficult situations, particularly when companies fail to fulfill their commitments. I urge everyone to exercise caution when considering internships with bond agreements. Let's collectively advocate for fair and transparent internship practices that prioritize the well-being and professional development of young individuals. #CareerSupport #ProfessionalDevelopment #EmploymentRights

In a recent report, researchers found 52% of undergraduates end up underemployed a year after earning their bachelor's degree. Meaning, they do not get a job in the field they studied or that even requires a college degree. The finding is part of a larger conversation about how to improve students' college experience. Researchers recommend quality career counseling, encouraging students to have paid internships, and opening fields of study that lead to college-level jobs. It reminds us how important our work is as an education-related nonprofit. Our programs close this college-to-career gap by offering scholarships, wraparound supports, and career readiness training. Research shows that students with internships are almost twice as likely to graduate college, have a 12 percent higher likelihood of being invited to job interviews, and earn 6 percent higher wages than non-interns once they graduate. However, some internships may lack structure and guidance which can weaken learning and job performance. University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers offer four strategies for designing effective internships for college students in The Conversation US.
How to create a college internship where students actually learn − and don't want to quit

Considering a master's degree in the United States? Here's why the fall 2024 intake could be your optimal choice: 1. More Opportunities: The fall intake, occurring in September, opens doors to a plethora of courses with abundant opportunities for funding, scholarships, and internships. 2. Time Advantage: Opting for the fall semester allows for more time after admission to explore internships and job opportunities, enhancing your overall educational experience. 3. Enhanced Acceptance Chances: With fewer applicants for the spring term, choosing the fall intake could potentially increase your chances of acceptance into your preferred program. 4. Assessment Period: The fall intake provides extra time for students to thoroughly assess and refine their academic preferences, ensuring a well-informed decision. While deadlines can vary among programs, the general application deadline for the fall 2024 term is typically around December of the preceding year. 🍂📚 #FallIntake #MastersDegree #StudyinUSA

Things I wish I had known during my second year of college . . . As soon as you enter your second year of college: 🌻Start focusing on academics along with extra co-curricular activities. 🌻Participate in various competitions held within or outside your college premise. 🌻Seek out different internships and skill-building courses to help you develop your resume in the future. 🌻Select subjects which will enhance your knowledge rather than just being taken for the sake of it. 🌻There are many cases where few people start preparing for some competitive exam concurrently (for the same, I'll go into more detail in another post), so if you'd like, you may also start getting ready or figuring it out. 🌻In your final month of 4th semester, I would like you to start preparing for the placement process which will start with the end of your 2nd year. ( For the same, I'll go into more detail in another post) In my case I followed a few of them as I wasn't much aware, but I don't want you to miss out on anything. I'll talk about my personal experience of the second and final year in my upcoming piece. So until then, stay tuned ✨ #Delhiuniversity #graduation #experience #learnings #College #campusplacement #academics

I recently booked a flight to attend my oldest daughter’s graduation at UC Santa Barbara and talked with her about her next steps, a question that every college senior gets very tired of hearing by springtime. I was reminded of a common hurdle that faces many college students: Getting internships is valuable, but many students will finish college in the next couple of months without having any significant professional experience to speak of. This creates more pressure on graduating seniors who are already under stress, having college loans to juggle and competing for a limited number of entry level positions. This is not to say that many college students don’t do a great job finding meaningful work experience. And unlike in my day, many of these opportunities actually pay - in some cases quite well. But far too many college students lack the easy professional contacts that benefit upper middle class families; I’ve lost track of the number of adults who tell me they helped ‘steer’ their college seniors into an internship. Moreover, many students are so concerned about the cost of college that they can’t focus on internships and instead try to find themselves the most hours or shifts possible, so they can cover the rising costs of tuition. What I would like to suggest here is that those of us in position to help create internship opportunities do so and maybe take it a step further. See if there is a way you can bring a smart and motivated recently graduated college senior into your workplace. At KGL Communications our firm recently hired a new graduate from American University, and she’s already showing great promise. This spring, give someone fresh out of college a chance, the way someone gave you a chance many years ago.

Disappointed with your college, job, or anything else? Not any more 😌 Answer me: Which kind of personality do you like? A- My college doesn't have any good placements or professors, not even proper classes. There is no exposure. After joining this one, my life became more trash. B- I will be doing an internship and working on my skills from other sources outside my campus, as we don't have any mandatory attendance. I would be preparing for the off-campus placements, which would let me know the real competition. I am talking about the same college only. Which person would you like to be like, A or B? Let me know. You have the answer. If we start just slagging about things, we will be left in disappointment. So start a fresh and new perspective 😉 This is my 42/45 post, which I ignored initially. #Noslagging #Worth #positivity

🔍 Internships are a boon to candidates #job searching and employers #recruiting for open roles. However, unpaid internships can be inaccessible to high-potential candidates from #underrepresented backgrounds who cannot afford to take on unpaid internships as they explore careers. 🌟 For #earlycareer candidates, #internships offer a range of benefits, including the opportunity to identify and clarify #career direction, develop #skills essential to career readiness, and gain first-hand #experience in the #workplace. For #employers, internships serve as a valuable source of new hires, enabling the #organization and candidates to mutually assess each other, thereby enhancing #retention. 💼 According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (#NACE)'s annual student survey, just 6.0% of paid internships went to Black students. Instead, Black students are overrepresented in unpaid internships, accounting for 7.3%. The same scenario applies to Hispanic-American students and students who identify as multi-racial. With #MicroInternships, you can ensure you're not missing out on these high-potential candidates eager to be an #asset to your organization. All Micro-Internships are paid, effectively providing value to all. 🙌 You post up to five 15-hour Micro-Internships AT NO COST 🚀, thanks to funding from the fully-funded Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation program, and engage students from nationwide Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as well as select Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) nationwide.
