St. Olaf student named Goldwater Scholar!
Paola Diaz ’25 has been awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year. The Goldwater Scholarship is a prestigious national competition for undergraduates who have shown significant achievement and potential in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering.
A biology and environmental studies major, Diaz has conducted research in several labs at St. Olaf. "This work is valuable to me as I am able to contribute new knowledge to an ever-changing world," she says.

🌍 OLIN COLLEGE SCHOLAR SEEKS PBL-INSPIRATION IN AALBORG 🌟
When Associate Professor Carrie Nugent decided to spend six months at AAU Materials and Production as part of a Fulbright Scholar program, she set out with a clear goal:
- Aalborg University is world-famous for its engineering education and it has much in common with Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, where I’m from. This includes a focus on project-based learning, the value of group work, and working on real-world problems. Therefore, it seemed like a good match, she says.
Despite the close kinship between the two institutions, Carrie Nugent has learned something new:
- The students at Aalborg University impress me with their ability to go out and seek information on their own.
At Olin College, problem-based learning is primarily part of the coursework, while at Aalborg University it is integrated into the student's project work independent of required classes.
Returning home, Carrie will share what she learned with the Olin faculty. Both Olin and AAU foster intrinsic motivation in students.
- I believe intrinsic motivation is the most powerful way to learn, so why not encourage students to have it whenever you can? concludes the Fulbright professor.
Thanks for stopping by, Carrie - and best of luck on your future PBL-endeavors! 💡🚀🎓

Check out this UCLA College article, written by Jonathan Riggs about Research Practice (RES PRC) 96! This course, titled "Bruins Studying Bruins: Introduction to Higher Education Research through a Course-Based Collaborative Research Project", was first offered last winter quarter. Undergraduates Tasnim Jahan (pictured here) and Kate De Guillenchmidt created a video summarizing their findings after taking the course in Winter 2023. Check out this article to watch their presentation and to learn what instructors had to say about the course.
RES PRC 96 will be offered again during the Winter 2024 quarter. This Pass/No Pass course introduces students to research by evaluating student videos from Undergraduate Research Week. The theme for Winter 2024 is "Making research presentations accessible to a diverse audience." No prior research experience is required!

Teach philosophy of science
Not just theories and techniques but the underlying philosophy of science.
Resetting the public’s understanding of science is a big job. A good place to start is with students getting science degrees. https://lnkd.in/gdmGj7H4
After 12 weeks, I'm happy to share that I have completed my Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) at Imperial College London, working under the supervision of Dr. Frank Berkshire in the Department of Mathematics.
The research focused on pattern formation, solitons and exactly integrable systems in the field of nonlinear sciences. In particular, I examined how these self-reinforcing waves emerge as solutions to a class of partial differential equations where the nonlinear and dispersive effects balance each other out, giving rise to travelling wave solutions . These solitons were shown to have the peculiar property of surviving unscathed from mutual interaction, apart from a phase shift.
The two-soliton solution was calculated using the inverse scattering transform, which used the scattering data to reconstruct the waveforms from a reflectionless potential.
After further mathematical analysis of how the infinite number of conservation laws associated with the Korteweg-de Vries equation relates to symmetries in the Lagrangian approach, I then went on to explore the applications of solitons in the field of optical fibres and nonlinear acoustic bubbles.
My research then led to the discussion of the theoretical formation and presence of superluminal solitons in general relativity, which were shown to not violate the energy conditions imposed by GR.
I now look forward to starting my placement with National Grid next week, where I'll be working as an infrastructure project manager.

SATBAYEV UNIVERSITY AND PENN STATE HAS BEEN STRENGTHENING THE COLLABORATION
Satbayev University and Pennsylvania State University (Penn State, USA) have signed a cooperation agreement.
The given document has launched a new stage of academic and scientific partnership between the two universities, which closely cooperate in petroleum engineering sphere. The agreement was signed by Penn State President Nili Bendapudi and Satbayev University Board Chairman-Rector Meiram Begentayev.
The deepening of cooperation between the two universities was the result of the work of RK Science and Higher Education Ministry within the framework of implementing the international agreements, as well as working trips to the USA by Science and Higher Education Minister Sayassat Nurbek, during which new agreements were reached on evolving the strategic partnership between the two countries in higher education sphere.
Based on the agreement, collaboration program between the two universities will be expanded in such areas as materials science, cybersecurity and geology. Universities are going to continue to implement double-degree education programs in the format 3+1+1 (Bachelor + Master's), as well as the exchange of teaching staff, students, conducting the joint scientific research.
This year, the recruitment of entrants, undergraduates, as well as 3rd year students who want to study at Penn State from September 2024 will begin.
Satbayev University delegation worked out all the details of future degree programs with the leadership of Penn State, departments’ representatives: Material Sciences and Geology, and also met with the representative of Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, Dr. Guido Cervone.
It should be noted that Pennsylvania State University is a public research university in the United States, located in State College city, Pennsylvania. It is one of the top 15 public universities in the USA, with almost 90 thousand students that makes it one of the largest in the USA and the world.

When teachers come together, a lot of informed conversation takes place. When the NCCAie and State Exams Commission are formulating plans, they need to be present to hear and take on board the ground data. Design without ground data is rarely enough in science, so should be part of the process of curriculum design and planning, particularly with the introduction of new Specifications.
One of the responsibilities of the NCCA is to inform the minister Department of Education — Ireland they need to do that, education before politics, educational informed based practice rather than a media driven vote getting practices..
