Something we rarely discuss but is so important to science: Collaborations. 3 things I have learned over the years: 1. Work with people you trust. This is the number 1 rule I live by. Can I express opposing ideas and concerns in a healthy way? Do they respect me as much as I respect them? Are they willing to put in the work? Do they behave in ethically responsible ways? 2. Use your network. When you start a new collaboration it isn’t always easy to answer the questions above. In these cases, I ask around. What’s it like to work with this person? Would they work with someone again? Why yes/no? 3. Dare to say no. This is possibly the most difficult one. But the times I have said no, or withdrew myself from a project, all the things I worried about did not happen. In fact, in most cases it even resulted in better opportunities. That said, it’s a learning process and something we should discuss more frequently. Something that was specifically build in to the program of the mini-leadership conference in Reims thanks to Birgit Schyns.
Super interesting advice for academic collaborations. Chimes with some discussions we had at our Leadership Mini-conference in Reims. https://lnkd.in/eeDWbUFB Urszula Łagowska Martyna Śliwa Kimberley Breevaart

Preparing for Leadership: Insights on Becoming an Effective Chair for Boards and Board Committees Stepping into the role of a Chair, whether for a Board or a critical Board Committee such as Audit & Risk Committee, is both an honor and a profound responsibility. The dynamics within these settings are complex, and the Chair's role is pivotal in steering discussions, fostering collaboration, and ensuring effective governance. Having served on multiple boards and chaired various Board Committees, I have gained invaluable insights into what makes a Board or Board Committee truly effective. One of the key learnings is the importance of balance—balancing diverse perspectives, fostering open dialogue, and ensuring that every voice is heard while keeping the focus aligned with the strategic vision. As a Chair, it is crucial to navigate the fine line between guiding the discussion and allowing independent thought to flourish. Understanding the dynamics of the Boardroom or Board Committee is another critical aspect. Each has its own culture, strengths, and challenges. Building trust and rapport among members is essential for productive and meaningful discussions. This requires not just leadership but also empathy, active listening, and a deep understanding of the business and its stakeholders. I'm grateful to Criticaleye for having me at their Chair Ready Programme, which has provided me with access to seasoned Chairs who have shared their experiences and insights. Their stories and advice have been instrumental in helping grow in my board career. For those looking to step into a Chair role, whether for a Board or a critical Board Committee, continuous learning and mentorship are invaluable. It's not just about leading meetings but about leading with vision and integrity, ensuring the board or committee can effectively support the organization's long-term success.
