At St. Luke’s, the COVID-19 pandemic has sparked innovations, and some have come from Advanced Analytics. The team’s COVID-19 modeling, to help predict the virus’ path through our footprint and to optimize staffing, has received some serious recognition. On Feb. 26, the team was notified that it had won an Aegis Graham Bell Award in the category to “Combat COVID-19 With Artificial Intelligence.” The award is the largest innovation award in the field of Telecom and SMAC (Social, Mobility, Analytics and Cloud) and is supported by the government of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. “It’s kind of like being nominated for an Oscar,” said Justin Smith, Ph.D., senior director of advanced analytics. “Very few health systems have and use technology like we do, so getting international attention for that is a big deal.” Among the models is one that has been able to forecast hospital and ICU capacity 30 days out, accurate to within a few patients. One was successful early on despite such little data, and more accurate than statewide models after accounting for Idaho’s unique geography.
