Two things to take away: 1) Decreasing turnover reduces the risk of death. Treating staff nurses well is good for patient outcomes. 2) Safe staffing ratios are necessary to keep patients alive. WE ALREADY KNOW THIS BUT HERE IT IS AGAIN. So please, if you’re in PA call your state senator and tell them to PASS HB 106 before you or your loved ones are finding out how this plays out in reality.

Increased nurse-to-nurse familiarity linked to better ICU patient outcomes- Nurses working in the ICU had a lower risk of experiencing a patient death during their shift if nurse-to-nurse familiarity at that time was high, according to results published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Intuitively, I already know this! On the flip side how are patient outcomes impacted by practices like regularly pulling and floating nurses and care techs to different units where patient population, environment and teams are less familiar? What are the solutions? How can nursing academia be a part of the solution?

❗ Chemo Safety Tip: ICU Nurses Have Exposure to Chemotherapy In this case study: A pregnant ICU nurse has been handling patients' chemotherapy-traced urine without wearing PPE. She was not informed by her hospital on her exposure risks and the need to wear chemo PPE. ❌ This is a MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. Per <USP 800> Guidelines: All healthcare staff who have exposure to hazardous drugs and substances must be trained on these risks and how to reduce their exposure. Even though not all ICU nurses administer chemotherapy, a lot ICU nurses care for oncology patients who are on active chemotherapy treatment. ✅ Questions to improve workplace and chemotherapy safety in your healthcare organization: 1. What type of chemo safety training is provided to your ICU nursing staff? 2. Is training documented and given at least annually? 3. I recently reviewed a case that lead to a negative patient outcome due to poor staffing. 💫 Per ASPAN (American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses) standards for nursing staffing in the PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit): "Two registered nurses, one of whom is a perianesthesia registered nurse competent in Phase I postanesthesia nursing, are in the same room/unit where the patient is receiving Phase I care. The Phase I registered nurse must have immediate access and direct line of sight when providing patient care. The second registered nurse should be able to directly hear a call for assistance and be immediately available to assist. These staffing recommendations should be maintained during “on call” situations." 💡 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 Unfortunately, the failure to maintain proper staffing levels in the PACU can have profound consequences. Reduced staffing may compromise patient safety, delay critical interventions, and hinder the overall quality of care. 👩⚕️ 👩⚕️ 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲: ASPAN recognizes the significance of maintaining appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios to ensure optimal patient safety. These standards are designed to prevent complications, promote timely interventions, and facilitate a smooth transition from anesthesia to recovery. 🤝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: The PACU is a dynamic environment that requires a collaborative team approach. ASPAN encourages a diverse team, including skilled nurses, anesthesia providers, and support staff, to work together. This collaborative effort ensures comprehensive care that addresses the unique needs of each patient. 🚩 In the case I reviewed, the hospital would often utilize one of the OR nurses as the second nurse. The PACU nurse would have to call into the OR if they needed assistance. In other words, the second nurse was not "immediately available to assist" per ASPAN standards. There were quite a few breaches of the standard of care which ultimately led to delays in patient care and a negative patient outcome. Want to learn more?
