My takeaways from Apple's WWDC24: The new emphasis on AI opens the door for changes in the way people design and use software, primarily by allowing applications to work together in greater concert. Today, most applications live on desktops and mobile devices as separate entities. On Monday, Apple laid out a sweeping set of AI features and initiatives that includes, among other things, a lessening of those barriers. Kelsey Peterson, Apple director for machine learning and AI, explained it this way. She said she wanted Siri to tell her when her mom’s flight was going to land. “What is awesome is that Siri actually cross references flight details that my mom shared with me by email with real-time flight tracking to give me her up-to-date arrival time,” Peterson said. Next, she imagined that she wanted Siri to tell her details of lunch plans with her mom. If the answer isn’t in her calendar, the new version of Siri can check casual conversations mentioned in a text. And it can determine how long it will actually take to get to lunch from the airport. Users will be able to interact with Siri via text as well as voice. “I haven’t had to jump from mail to messages to maps to figure out this plan. And … tasks that would have taken minutes on my own … could be addressed in a matter of seconds,” she said. From the developers’ point of view, Apple’s approach to AI will unlock new possibilities, according to Figma CEO Dylan Field. “I think it's really neat when you can say okay, there's different parts of functionality from different apps that can be woven together into one intent .. I'm very curious where that goes over time,” said Field, who was in the audience during Apple’s presentations. Field said Apple talked deeply about integrating AI functionality into various app experiences and into the Apple platform, in contrast to the “sprinkle AI on top” approach taken by some companies. “I'm hopeful this … kicks off a lot more serious investment by developers into how do you truly improve your app experience and really design with AI in mind,” he said. "You'll pull up your phone, you'll ask it a question. It'll either tell you the answer or it'll complete the action for you,” said Box CEO Aaron Levie. “What we saw today was the biggest stepping stone in that direction that Apple's shown, probably since the creation of Siri." Craig Federighi, Apple senior vice president of software engineering, said the "personal intelligence system" is comprised of large language and diffusion models that are specialized for everyday tasks, and can adapt on the fly to current activity. It also includes an on-device semantic index that can organize and surface information from across apps. When you make a request, Apple Intelligence uses its semantic index to identify the relevant personal data, and feeds it into generative models, many of which models run entirely on-device but can scale out to the private cloud.

Of all the interesting parts of Google’s Gemini announcement, one is keeping me up at night wondering about the possibilities for the future: dynamic coding. Some commentators have criticized Google's Gemini announcement because some videos showed aspirational concepts for the future that are well beyond current capabilities. They have also brushed off the video of dynamic coding saying things like, "how useful is it to create a novel UX just to find a cupcake?" While it's fair to be critical of a company exaggerating current capabilities, I think these commentators are missing the big picture. Back in the 1990s, when we were waiting for a static web page of text to load over our 14.4 or 28.8 baud modems, we would never have been able to predict a future of pinching and zooming on a full-glass screen iPhone to get a closer view of a streaming HD video. It's easy to dismiss today's capabilities just like some dismissed buying Beanie Babies on eBay—missing the moment that foretold a multi-trillion dollar e-commerce industry 30 years later. I believe we're at an analogous moment with dynamic design. Today's Gemini demo is just today—the important question is what might happen over the next decades. #artificiality #ai #artificialintelligence #google #gemini https://lnkd.in/ggcPmvh9

IMPACT NEWS | Apple's advanced AI-powered features will not be available for users in the EU at the same time as the rest of the world, owing to the provisions of the Digital Markets Act. The DMA requires product features to be interoperable with products of other companies, which Apple feels hurts user privacy and data security..! 1. Apple Intelligence — the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac — combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s useful and relevant to the user. 2. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools powered by Apple Intelligence, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write. 3. With Summarize, users can select text and have it recapped in a paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list. 4. With Priority Messages in Mail, a new section at the top of the inbox shows the most urgent emails. 5. Email summaries allow users to see key points without needing to open a message, and for long threads, they can view pertinent details with just a tap. 6. Smart Reply provides suggestions for a quick response, and will identify questions in an email to make sure everything is answered. 7.Priority Notifications surface what’s most important, and summaries help users scan long or stacked notifications to show key details right on the Lock Screen. 8. A new Focus, Reduce Interruptions, surfaces only the notifications that might need immediate attention. 9. In the Notes and Phone apps, users can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio. 10. When the recording is finished, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points. 11. Easy to use and built right into apps like Messages, Image Playground allows users to create fun images in seconds. 12. With Image Playground, users can choose from a range of concepts from categories like themes, costumes, accessories, and places. 13. In Messages, users can use Image Playground to quickly create fun images for their friends, and see personalized suggested concepts related to their conversations. 14. In Messages, users can use Image Playground to quickly create fun images for their friends, and see personalized suggested concepts related to their conversations. 15. With Image Wand in the Apple Pencil tool palette, users can select empty space to create an image using context from the surrounding area. 16. Users can pick someone from their photos and create a Genmoji that looks like them. 17. The new Clean Up tool in Photos can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject. 18. With Memories, Apple Intelligence can pick out the best photos and videos based on a user’s description, craft a storyline, and arrange it all into a movie with its own narrative arc. 19. Now users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment.

Does GenAI lead to more creativity or just more of the same creativity? Here's what happened: Figma (a leading collaborative interface design software) has temporarily removed its AI-driven feature "Make Designs" after Andy Allen (CEO of Not Boring Software) noticed it generated designs that closely resembled Apple's iOS weather app. Not just once. Not just the first screen. But he tried 3 times and the whole app design was always very similar to Apple's app. CTO Kris Rasmussen clarified that Figma didn't train the generative AI models used, which are powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o and Amazon's Titan Image Generator G1. Instead, they utilized off-the-shelf models and a bespoke design system, which might be the root cause of the issue. This incident raises an interesting question: Does generative AI fuel more creativity or just more of the same creativity? While AI tools can significantly speed up design processes and spark new ideas, they also run the risk of homogenizing creativity by relying on existing patterns and datasets. Think it's a good sign that creative minds still have a future in this tech-driven society. #Figma #AI #Design #Apple #digitalpinnacle

Colleagues: happy new year! While we were all eating and celebrating over the holiday, Microsoft dropped an amazing new FREE AI app. Our new Copilot app does many things, but the bottom line is it brings the latest generative AI tech to your fingertips in an easy-to-use way. Here are a few ways I am already using it: 1. Search - it’s really easy to search for answers to the many questions I have throughout the day. 2. Summarizing complex issues - I encounter these at work often and benefit from asking for a concise summary of an issue. 3. Constructing a document, memo or mail - I often present or propose things in numbered tasks or bullets. So, I start broad and then need to boil down into details. Copilot can help with many of those details and give you good sources instantly. https://lnkd.in/eH38FcUj

🌟 Figma Pauses AI Feature Rollout After Apple's Beta Controversy 🌟 Figma has decided to halt the rollout of its new AI-powered feature, "Figma AI", in response to recent concerns sparked by Apple's AI feature in the iOS 16 beta. Figma AI was meant to enhance design efficiency through machine learning. However, similar to Apple's "Quick Look", which uses AI for generating product and scene images, Figma's feature has raised ethical concerns regarding AI-generated content and attribution. 📍 Personal Note: Many designers I've spoken to are worried about the misuse of AI in our field. It's a reminder that technology’s rapid pace requires equally quick responses to ethical challenges. Key Points: 1. Figma AI aimed to foster creativity and efficiency. 2. The controversy arose from issues about proper credit and compensation for AI-generated content. 3. Figma's pause is a step towards ensuring ethical AI use and transparency. ⚠️ What are your thoughts on AI-generated content in design? How can we balance innovation with ethical responsibility? Let's discuss and share ideas! #Figma #AI #EthicsInTech #DesignCommunity #Innovation #AppleControversy
