DeepMind just announced Med-PaLM M, a Multimodal Generative AI model that understands: 1. Clinical language 2. Imaging 3. Genomics The model reaches or surpasses SOTA on 14 different tasks all with the same set of model weights. "In a side-by-side ranking on 246 retrospective chest X-rays, clinicians express a pairwise preference for Med-PaLM M reports over those produced by radiologists in up to 40.50% of cases, suggesting potential clinical utility." Med-PaLM M was built by fine tuning and aligning PaLM-E - an embodied multimodal language model to the biomedical domain using MultiMedBench, a new open source multimodal biomedical benchmark. https://lnkd.in/geNJrYdu

Ever considered the way #AI navigates the complexities of medical #imaging? In a recent study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers explored the performance of an AI model in segmenting kidney and cyst regions in #MRimages of patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). https://lnkd.in/eBNu3EnX   The intriguing part? The study compared a custom U-Net model trained on a single institutional dataset versus one trained on a larger multi-institutional dataset. The findings revealed comparable accuracy in kidney segmentation, but disparities emerged in cyst segmentation.  While the single institutional model showcased promise under specific conditions, it raises questions about the broader applicability of AI in medical imaging.
