Column: Accelerating Tampa Bay's transformation with key projects Tampa Bay is on the verge of a remarkable transformation. With major projects like airport expansions, mixed-use developments, new stadiums and enhanced infrastructure, our region is poised for a growth spurt unlike anything we've seen in recent years. The successful execution of these projects has the potential to reshape our economy, attract new businesses and improve the quality of life for everyone in our community. However, if we don't prioritize the timely completion of these developments, we risk missing out on these opportunities. Local elected officials must act swiftly to ensure these projects move forward without unnecessary delays. https://lnkd.in/etHxnQAV

Really enjoyed Anchin’s “Construction Outlook 2024: Infrastructure, Resiliency, and Other Challenges and Opportunities” event yesterday at CLUB in cooperation with the ACEC New York (American Council of Engineering Companies of New York), the New York Building Congress (NYBC), and the Subcontractors Trade Association (STA). The speakers were great! KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Janno Lieber, Chair and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) PANELISTS: Carlo Scissura, President and CEO, New York Building Congress (Moderator) Laura Bush, Director of Operations, NYC Metro Region, Consigli Construction Co., Inc. Ian McNamara Senior Vice President, Northeast District Leader, WSP John B. Rice, P.E., LEED AP President & Principal, Legacy Engineers, D.P.C. Kirsten Sibilia, Managing Principal, Dattner Architects Some factoids from Janno’s key note: - The subway’s on-time performance is the best it’s been in 10 years - The MTA is a State Agency and their primary relationship with the City of NY is with the NYC Police Department and subway crime is less than it was before COVID -The MTA’s budget is $55B over 5 years (2020-2024) and is about to get a $5B bump from the Feds. - The MTA is worth a trillion and a half dollars He also mentioned that there will be serious consequences if we don’t implement congestion pricing and urged us all to support it. He also thanked us for supporting investment in transportation infrastructure, which is one of my favorite deeds - so I thank you too! The panelists touched on several trends but the topic that dominated was housing. Kirsten’s comments were particularly interesting to me - she shared how she is seeing a lot of pent up demand from housing developers. She also mentioned that she sees mixed-use developments (that include healthcare, schools, retail, near to transportation) as recipes for success. Agreed! Was great to see David Koren, Jennifer Rice Stone, Mindy Horowitz, PG, Giancarlo Sapio, Alanna Draudt! #Anchin #ConstructionOutlook #Transportation #Engineering #Construction

A new op-ed from Carlo Scissura on capital process reform is out today in the New York Daily News. "New York faces several overlapping generational challenges: economic, as our central business districts find their footing for the work-from-home era; and existential, as the reality of climate change encroaches on our shores and comes up into our basements, streets, and subway tunnels through the pipes below... There is something Albany can do: Get capital process reform passed at last, as part of a suite of recommendations to hasten infrastructure delivery." 'London remains the best city in the world' and on balance, Tim Chapman FREng is right. As most of the industry were negotiating trains to Leeds last Monday, there was a full house at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to hear the findings of the 'State of the City - London report ' that outlined the priorities for the Greater London Authority and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan in ensuring that London retains its prominence both nationally and globally. The report recommends prioritising the decarbonisation of Londons housing stock and transportation systems. It suggests that incentives should given to retrofit our homes to make them more energy efficient whilst working with the construction industry to develop the skills needed to undertake these works. For Transportation as well as integrating better active travel infrastructure we should also consider how the boroughs could work together to incorporate both small and large scale logistics facilities to support low carbon last mile delivery. What was refreshing to see in this report was that it recommended spending both private and public sector funds on improving the infrastructure that London already has, adapting it to reflect our current and future needs across the entire city , rather then on insisting on spending limited funds on delivering new capital projects that relatively, will have an impact on far less of the communities of the city. Shaped and compiled by : Claire R. of Bectel, Steve Lee and Rajesh Pathak of Jacobs, Oana Sala of Expedition Engineering Ltd and Tim Chapman FREng of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) To read and download the full State of the City - London report, visit https://lnkd.in/e8uKY6wu

Informative event at the NATIONAL BROWNFIELD INSTITUTE today where Leaders, including Andy Street, Mark Farmer and the Leader of Solihull Council, Clr Ian Courts discussed the new Homes for the Future Strategy which brings together two distinct elements: a clear ambition for building zero carbon homes and the region’s proven capabilities in advanced manufacturing. Using the latest digital technologies and innovations in construction, the Future Homes Strategy aims to build more energy efficient, warmer, healthier, sustainable homes while creating brand new business, investment, and job opportunities. Nationally, the Government has set out a clear plan for challenging the construction industry to embrace the building of energy-efficient, resilient, zero-carbon homes through planned changes to Building Regulations in 2025 (the Government’s ‘Future Homes Standard’). The Government is also incentivising new building techniques through requirements set out in major funding programmes such as the Affordable Housing Programme, now run in the West Midlands by West Midlands Combined Authority and Homes England following the 2023 Devolution Deal. Andy Street also announced that there will also be an additional £200m of public money available to support future developments. O'Brien Contractors Ltd have always been at the forefront of innivotive solutions to improve productivity and consider ways to decarbonise our operations. We welcome the opportunity to get more involved in the Homes for the Future Strategy and work collaboratively with Local Authorities, Developers and other Stakeholders to help drive it forward across our Region. #wmhomesforthefuture #modernmethodsofconstruction #circulareconomy #netzerocarbon #civilengineering Janet Bayley University of Wolverhampton

Exciting Milestone for Baltimore: Rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge Proud to share a significant update for our beloved city posted yesterday. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) have secured key federal environmental approvals for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Categorical Exclusion (CE) classification and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) approval for the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge Rebuild Project marks a crucial step forward. This project, led by the unwavering efforts of MDTA, SHA, and the leadership of Governor Wes Moore, will restore a vital link in our interstate system, with significant positive impacts on our community and economy. This approval ensures that the replacement bridge, built within the former bridge’s right-of-way, will have the same capacity of four travel lanes without significant impacts on community, natural, or cultural resources. Key Highlights of the Project: - No significant impacts on planned growth or land use. - No relocations of people or businesses. - Travel patterns will remain consistent with pre-collapse conditions. - No impact on historic or recreational resources. The MDTA has also released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a $75 million General Engineering Consultant contract. This step further ensures the seamless execution of the project, incorporating strong community engagement and compliance with Disadvantaged Business Enterprise goals. As a Baltimore native, I'm incredibly optimistic about the future this rebuild promises for our city. It symbolizes resilience, connectivity, and progress. Stay tuned for more updates and community events related to the bridge's reconstruction. #BaltimoreStrong #FrancisScottKeyBridge #Transportation #Infrastructure #Community #Progress #Resilience #Rebuild #MDTA #SHA #GovernorWesMoore #FHWA #EnvironmentalApproval

Economic Investment Signals, Increased Commercial Real Estate Value, and Major Infrastructure Changes: Let’s Talk Traffic! 🚧🚗 Important updates are coming to Florida from the FDOT concerning significant improvements to I-75, particularly through Marion County. What’s Happening? Florida has started a $4 billion improvement project for I-75 as of this year. Of this, $479 million will go towards adding auxiliary lanes, interchange modifications, and right-of-way acquisition to ease traffic congestion through Sumter and Marion counties. Additionally, a new interchange is being built just north of Ocala near Highway 326 to accommodate what is soon to be the largest Buc-ee's gas station in the nation. Impact on Commercial Real Estate 📈 While construction will cause temporary congestion, the long-term benefits are substantial. The Ocala market is booming, evidenced by Dollar Tree’s advanced automated distribution center and the presence of Amazon, FedEx, AutoZone, and Chewy. These businesses chose Ocala for its strategic location and robust workforce, driving the need for I-75 improvements. The Bigger Picture 🌟 This investment reflects the explosive growth in Ocala and enhances its appeal as a midpoint between Miami and Atlanta. Improved infrastructure will support ongoing and future commercial investments, boosting property values and economic development. 1moBecause of transformation, people are getting priced out and the divide between haves and have-nots is growing. Our economy has been re-shaped for the worse already. At the rate we are going will we will soon be Miami or worse, Dubai or Doha, pretty to look but vastly divided by class and income. But good luck with your projects.
