Repealing NEW ORDINANCE TO CODE BOOKS ORDINANCE NO. 230401 Amending Chapter 3, Code of Ordinances, by repealing Section 3-431, “Setting Goals for Individual Contracts” and enacting in lieu thereof a new section of like number and subject matter regulating the application of numeric MBE/WBE goals on certain projects leased for development or receiving economic development incentives or tax abatement. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY: 2. Ignoring the letter from The Kcmo Fairness Board Chairman & Fairness Committee regarding Civil Rights violations ? Harrasment of minority contractors ? inadequate reporting from Kcmo CREO department ? No Disparity report for 9 years and more ? 2016 Disparity Report below: Department of I think 1.2 minority [participation] and 2.5 WBE [participation], when there was adequate availability of minority and women contractors to meet the City’s standard kind of goal of 15 [percent] and 7 [percent]. They’re diluting the opportunity for minority and women contractors when it comes through the statutory business development organizations, all of whom have different sets of rules..… There ought to be a uniform code that is incorporated in all the development agreements which people in our community never see.… There’s a disconnect. And I realize they’re trying to change some of that now but the insulting part of it was there was more money spent through statutory agencies last year for contracting activities than there were through City departments.… It’s obviously developer driven. By the time we see it the development agreement has already been executed. Caused lack of capital for Jackson County schools and libraries. Mayor Lucas and Insult to African Americans everywhere?

📢 Attention Rondo Community‼️ 📢 Yesterday, the Star Tribune published an article by Our Street Minneapolis discussing i94 and the #RONDO neighborhood. Just two days prior, Asian Media Access released an article about the new Sears development, which includes a RONDO mall on the first floor. Surprisingly, none of us from the Rondo community have been consulted about these developments. This land is originally Rondo descendant land, as it was initially an army base where Quonset Huts for black families resided before the Sears development. This land belongs to the Rondo Community Covenant! It’s concerning to see organizations trying to leverage and capitalize on our families’ lineage and history without involving US in the conversation. Now more than ever, it’s crucial for us to show up and control the narrative. We can’t afford to sit back and watch others use our history for their own benefits. Moreover, the developers and consultants behind this project, such as Kimley-Horn , Seritage, and S9, along with Cedarleaf Dahl, have a history of gentrifying neighborhoods. They are just money-hungry organizations that are not working for the best interests of communities. If they want our voice, we need to ask ourselves, what are we getting in return? Let’s come together, raise our voices, and demand our rightful place in these discussions. Fresh insights from the Maryland Innovation Center: we were privileged to present our strategy to the Rotary of Columbia, MD, focusing on the pressing issue of gun violence that's affecting not only our urban centers but also our suburban neighborhoods. Our approach is centered on building social capital—fostering a network of relationships among local agencies, community leaders, and residents. We've seen firsthand how this strategy can reduce gun violence by creating an environment of mutual support and collaboration, leading to stronger, more responsive interventions. The link between social capital and safer communities is undeniable. By strengthening the fabric of trust and cooperation, we not only combat gun violence but also pave the way for a more resilient society. This is a call to action for cities and towns alike. Let's embrace a social capital approach not just to reduce gun violence, but also to unlock economic opportunities and bolster community development. And let's begin right here in Maryland.
