ASHRAE had expanded its commitment reducing of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the built environment by transitioning its building decarbonization task force into the Center of Excellence for Building Decarbonization (CEBD).  The goal of the new Center of Excellence for Building Decarbonization is to accelerate the adoption of climate change mitigation policies and reinforce ASHRAE's commitment to achieving net zero GHG emissions in operation for all new buildings by 2030. Resource Synergy is excited to transition our Climate collaboration with the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe from the Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP) to a Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP). CCAP is a strategic framework adopted by tribes to address climate change through mitigation, adaptation, and resilience measures. A CCAP outlines goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting sustainable transportation, and protecting natural resources. These plans typically include community engagement, policy recommendations, and timelines to achieve climate objectives, ensuring a coordinated approach to building a sustainable, low-carbon future for the community. CCAPS are part of the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The CPRG provides significant support to states, municipalities, and tribes for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ResourceSynergy

The Second winner of the 2024 OWWA / WEAO Climate Action Award is Durham Region (The Regional Municipality of Durham) - winner for the GHG Reduction / Mitigation Stream! The Region of Durham developed a long-term greenhouse gas strategy specific to its water and wastewater assets which aligned with the Region’s Corporate Climate Action Plan commitment of net-zero by 2045. The strategy includes a comprehensive GHG inventory inclusive of process emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, re-baselining its historical inventory, established interim GHG reduction targets, developed an action plan for GHG reduction, and identified areas for future improvement to move towards the 2045 net-zero target. Durham Region’s framework for developing the strategy has already been levered by other Ontario municipalities. The strategy was developed by Jacobs.

In 2022, World Resources Institute and WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development began the reexamination process for the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), looking to enhance the protocol's accuracy and relevance in the face of evolving climate goals. The GHGP, launched in 1998 by WRI and WBCSD, has been a crucial tool for organizations to measure and report greenhouse gas emissions. Its evolution has made it an essential resource for climate commitments worldwide. As organizations ramp up efforts to adopt the GHGP for their emissions accounting, concerns about its effectiveness have emerged. Are the emissions reductions genuine? Are there areas for improvement? To answer these questions, we hosted a series of workshops from 2022-2023, bringing together key experts and stakeholders. Panel 3 of the Melbourne session of our 2023 Corporate Climate Masterclass series will take a look at the current, and future, state of Australia's ACCU Scheme. The Independent Review into ACCUs released at the beginning of the year found that while the scheme was sound, there were a number of updates required for continued improvement. We take a look at the progress on implementing these recommendations with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, before also taking in the market perspective and considerations for future supply constraints with the Clean Energy Regulator. Action under the Montreal Protocol has set the ozone layer on a path to recovery, and contributed to climate change mitigation for over three decades. In the face of the climate emergency though, as well it's own significant challenges, even this most successful of environmental treaties can and should be strengthened. In our recent JIES article, 'More the offer from the Montreal Protocol', we outline the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and suggest a series of actions that Parties could take maximise the Montreal Protocol's climate and environmental benefits. I am very happy to have completed the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies Climate Change Policy and Practice Certificate program over this past year. The program helped enhance my understanding of the key drivers of climate change policies and regulations in North American jurisdictions, and assess what they are doing to reduce, offset, manage, and disclose greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
