TECHNOLOGY CHANGE POINT IN FINECOAL DEWATERING – ICPC 2023 Our colleague Jurgen Hahn will report on “Technology Change Point - a benchmark for energy savings in fine coal dewatering” on the XX International Coal Preparation Congress 2023 (ICPC), 16. - 19. Oct., Gold Coast, Australia Rotary vacuum disc filters and horizontal belt filters are applied in the dewatering of fine coal concentrates achieving typically moisture content in the range of 20 – 30 w/w %. They have the lowest energy requirements when residual moisture in the range of 22 – 30 w/w % is sufficient. However, the lower the desired residual moisture, the higher the air flow through the coal particles and the energy required to generate this higher air flow. Depending on the individual concentrate properties, there is a critical point for the residual moisture from which the specific energy requirement per tonne of solids increases exponentially if the filter cake is to be further dewatered. This point is to be regarded as a "technology change point" and other dewatering technologies such as hyperbaric filtration should be considered if lower residual moisture is required.
