The Japanese telecom industry aims to boost global connectivity by deploying high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) or flying base stations by 2025. These unmanned vehicles will fly in the stratosphere, providing broader network coverage. The technology, pioneered by companies like Japan’s NTT, relies on solar-powered drones flying at 11-15 miles altitude. Delegates from 163 countries adopted Japan’s proposal for international standards at the World Radiocommunication Conference in late 2023, enabling the use of specific frequency bands globally for flying base stations. HAPS is seen as a solution to bridge the digital divide. #japan #5g #5GTechnology #businessdor

One year ago, researchers from the Drone Center at SDU have succeeded in connecting a #Drone directly to a #HighVoltage line with 150,000 Volts in a test in central Odense, where it has taken new energy for its battery from the line. The result opens for the use of drones for both inspection and other tasks directly on the high voltage lines, operate autonomously for a longer time and function beyond the Visual Line Of Sight (#VLOS). 🚩 UpVision is involved in the development of an innovative drone detection system. As part of the MEDuSA project, UpVision experts are working with Czech and Italian partners on a system that detects drones within a specific perimeter. They are testing a completely groundbreaking method based on two components: ➡ smaller sensors that are deployed in a defined perimeter, ➡ a control centre where algorithms are processed and evaluated to detect drone movement. Unlike radar, the system can detect drones in any weather, including fog or at night. It should therefore operate in 24/7 mode. Currently, smaller GNSS sensors are being tested and their functionality will be verified in cooperation with Prague Airport. As can be seen in the video an Israeli „Drone Dome” C-UAS system is destroyed by… an FPV drone. Whether it was caused by the radar not seeing it coming, jammer malfunction or something else is unknown. However what is known is that FPV drones are an advanced threat that needs specifically tuned C-UAS systems to effectively counter it. Get #SKYctrl get leading 3D MIMO radars #FIELDctrl

Drones have the potential to transform industries, enhance safety, and improve efficiency. But to make this vision a reality, we need advanced communications technology like 4G/5G, technological advancements, commercial demand, and, most importantly, clear and effective regulation. In partnership with BT Group, our 'Race to the Top' report offers valuable recommendations to policymakers and regulators, it assesses the UK's drone readiness, benchmarking it against global counterparts, including the G7 nations. 5G-connected drones will have a transformative impact on public safety...* Scaling their use will require close collaboration between the aviation and telecommunications industries, in cooperation with regulators. Next week, I’m headed to the #MWC23 Smart Mobility Summit to talk about exactly this from the UAS perspective... should be a fantastic discussion! Drop me a line if you’ll also be in Vegas – would love to connect! *ICYMI - We just launched the Skydio X10 - the world’s first commercially available enterprise drone with fully integrated 5G connectivity - and we introduced it to the world with a live 5G-enabled patrol-led Drone as First Responder demo. It was a real crowd pleaser! Link with more info in the comments. #5G #aviation #telecommunications #publicsafety #drones #DFR GSMA, GSMA - Internet of Things, MWC Las Vegas, CTIA
