What a line up! We’re so excited to have these incredible women as panelists for the MIT Female Founders Pitch Competition on March 14th at Deutsche Bank. When we were working to curate this year’s panelists, we wanted to prioritize a few things: For the VCs- we were looking for investors with a depth of experience in this field AND firms that are currently looking to deploy capital. The investors on our panel have recently closed funds, are actively looking to deploy capital or are frequent ongoing check writers. For the entrepreneurs - we were looking for women who have big disruptive ideas and have been through fundraising and can share their stories to give perspective to up-and-coming entrepreneurs. There are SO many other incredible investors and entrepreneurs coming on March 14th. Did you know that we've had accelerators in MENA since 2011? But first, here is the main idea of this post: Attracting new investors to our venture space is the best solution to break through its limitations. The global capital crunch and availability of LP capital in our region can be our chance. Until now we've only been attracting what Steve Blank calls "innovation theater" - do a Shark Tank franchise, bring the Kevin O'Learys, give money to accelerator-as-a-service big brands, do hackathons. Everything that's done is exactly what an angel investor thinks an ecosystem looks like. Yes, we've had accelerators in MENA since 2011. We've been favoring innovation theater for 13 years. There is a reason why we still call our ecosystem "nascent" until now. And there is a reason behind the high failure rate in our region's startups graduating from stage to stage. Anyone who is brought up in innovation theater is less likely to endure in the wilderness of #scale. In fact, go ahead and watch as many seasons of Shark Tank and see how much non-tech inventions and contraptions are there, and how many of contestants fail after winning on the show. Policy and interventions should counter balance that. Government intervention that is doing more innovation theater does not solve the limitations in our tech venture space. Our attraction efforts must seize the opportunity to bring serious investors to the region, and attract serious tech startups as well. In its 16th year, Venture Atlanta Conference 2023 outdid itself, becoming a cornerstone event for the innovation ecosystem in the Southeast.
