Interesting read and some very good points. There is a high need for more practical career advising in higher education institutions. Graduates need skills to be prepared for the workforce, not just head knowledge on a certain topic.
Love that our LSU Olinde Career Center team gets to be the driver of this work at Louisiana State University. It helps to have buy in from great faculty and staff partners across the campus. https://lnkd.in/gj_6KQJm

In recognizing the National First Generation College Celebration this week, I think it is important to examine a bit of context. It has been widely shared that first generation students occupy a growing fraction of seats on campuses. It has also been reported widely that they have not been graduating at the same rates as their peers whose parents did complete college. For decades we have been aware of the benefits of completing a degree which include increased life time earnings, safer communities to live in, access to better healthcare and a higher likelihood of children participating in higher education among other things. I applaud the many researchers, faculty and staff who are working diligently to improve access and support to our first generation students. There are some fantastic programs in our higher ed community! There unfortunately remains a significant number (read huge) of first generation students who have left our institutions prior to earning their degree. We need to work hard to meet these former students where they are now and help reengage those who desire to return to school. Once folk get jobs, start families or have other significant life obligations, the return to campus Monday through Thursday from 9am-12pm isn't likely, so our ability to provide flexibility is key. Please share any research or student support you may be conducting or providing that is increasing access to and success at the institution. #studentsuccess #highereducation #universityadmissions #firstgen

As more students question the value of college, more high schools are bringing college options into their walls. In the latest installment of our Doubting College series, we visit a high school where students can earn a two-year degree without leaving the building, and where students can also get a jump on other career options that don’t require higher education.

Athletics Director at Texas A&M University-San Antonio | Honorary Commander, 433rd Airlift Wing, JBSA | SABJ 40 Under 40 | Leadership San Antonio, Class 46 | RRAC AD of the Year (2023-24).
Welcome back faculty and staff! It was great to see a lot of my colleagues during convocation. In addition, it was exciting to hear from President Ochoa on his vision. A few takeaways as we, at Texas A&M University-San Antonio , approach this new year. 1. We will spotlight Student Success by focusing on: - A data informed approach to challenges and opportunities at the University. - Graduation rates/retention - Creating pathways to obtain degrees. - Reducing inequities among student success - Loving the work that we do 2. We will focus on faculty and staff success and retention. 3. We will look to build a sense of community for all people where they feel valued. 4. We will build assets and structures including facilities, degree offerings that positively impact the student experience. These are some of the highlights. I have no doubt that this new year will be our best yet! Go Jags!! #TransformingTomorrowTogether #BuildingChampions #BACKtheJAGS #PawsUp

🎓 Today, on National First-Generation College Student Day, I want to celebrate the incredible journey that many of us have embarked on. As a proud #firstgenerationcollegestudent - someone who went from a community college (at Cerritos College) to getting a BA degree from California State University, Los Angeles, an MA from Fuller Theological Seminary and a doctorate (at Biola University) and now seeking a second master's degree (at University of California, Irvine - The Paul Merage School of Business) - I know firsthand the challenges we face, but also the #determination that drives us forward. 👨🏽🎓 Being the first in your family to attend #college is a testament to your #resilience and #ambition. It's a path filled with uncertainty, but it's also a path that opens doors to new #opportunities and paves the way for future generations. In other words, first gen college students will set a new direction for generations to come. Remember, your unique experiences and perspectives as a first-gen student are valuable assets. Embrace them, because they set you apart in a world that values #diversity and #inclusion. Let's continue #breakingbarriers, defying expectations, and showing the world what we're capable of. We do this for our familia. We do this for our comunidad. Our success is their success. ✊🏽 To all the first-gen students out there, you are an inspiration! Keep reaching for the stars and inspiring others to follow in your footsteps. ¡Pa ‘lante, mi gente! 👊🏽 #FirstGenPride #NationalFirstGenDay #EducationMatters #educatedlatinos

In a recent op-ed, President Marvin Krislov writes "In my position, I have the honor of witnessing the growth and transformation of our students as they voyage through their academic careers. Each year, it is my greatest privilege to stand before our graduating seniors as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives — as that truly is what the meaning of a 'commencement' is." As an advocate, product, and employee of higher education, I understand the importance of helping high school students develop successful academic and professional plans for college. I also understand that college and career preparation and planning can be quite overwhelming (scary, even!) for many high school students as well as parents. Students today have so many amazing colleges and universities to research and choose from, but it can a challenge for them to figure out where to start! For students (and parents/guardians) who need some advice on how to prepare for college, please check out my blog article to receive tips that can help you feel more confident in taking your next steps towards post-secondary education after high school! https://lnkd.in/eNkqhd9d
