If DEI were a product, it would be considered a massive failure. For the last six years our nonprofit Women Who Tech that we incubate inside of Rad Campaign has been tracking the alarming rates of harassment and discrimination women in tech and founders face. Today we released our 2023 report: State of Women in Tech and Startups. The latest data shows that 41% of women founders have been harassed. 50% of women founders who were sexually harassed were propositioned for sex in exchange for funding. Yes, you read that right. 65% of women founders were told they would raise more money if they were a man. So much for the MeToo movement and DEI worthless pledges. More data below. #womenintech #womenfounders #startups #tech #DEI #Diversity #VC #Investors #Diversity

Empowering Technology Teams to Drive Business Success | Ally | Speaker | Founder | Non-Executive Director
The stats shared by Allyson Kapin below are absolutely heartbreaking. But I thank you and your team, Allyson - for doing the work, and sharing the results. Between numbers like this and the stories being shared by Grapevine, what comes to my mind is the people behind the numbers - the humans being harmed & the people doing the harming. And... the bystanders. This post is addressed to the bystanders - it's for you if you're a man working in one of these orgs and you're aware of what's going on, and you don't like it. You might be anywhere from mildly uncomfortable to incandescent with rage. Yet you don't act to stop or prevent it. Why not? I get it, it's complex. Speaking from my own experience, when I've not acted, fear played a big role - fear of consequences - ostracism, career impact. Fear of the unknown. Selfish reasons - but paralysing nonetheless. But I wasn't living my values. I wasn't being my authentic self. I was deeply ashamed. In this way, although the harm is horrifically unevenly distributed, the patriarchy harms us all. I believe that systemic power structures, from the subtle and complex to the overt and plainspoken keep us silent and inert. But it doesn't have to be that way. You can live your values and show your authentic self. If you're a man in this situation - if you see what's happening and feel powerless to stop it, I want to help. I offer free peer support in allyship. I don't have all the answers and I don't know your situation, and I need your help too, but I can share what has worked for me, and I believe that we can help each other. You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/gczv_mnW Please connect and DM me for a confidential conversation. Let's help each other #DoBetterTogether. #allyship #leadership #tech

My co-founder Dani Strang is speaking on one of the most important topics of the day - join the virtual event this Wednesday to learn about The New IPO!
Join us virtually at #LWOL on July 26 at NOON, as we dive into a discussion with Dani Strang of Maggie on "Investing in the new IPO: The Ideas, Perspectives & Opinions of Women". Just because #women are gaining seats at the table, does not mean their differentiated perspectives are valued, heard, or celebrated. Dani, recently interviewed 56 women on their current workplace experience and if they feel comfortable and confident to express their innermost ideas, perspectives, and opinions; especially in the conversations where they are needed most. The result? Only 2 women answered yes. Let's learn how we can invest in the new IPO by understanding what is stopping women from sharing openly. Register here ➡️ https://lu.ma/yarxz7k0 📣 #LWOL is open to everyone and we encourage you to bring a friend along to #LWOL that will enjoy this conversation! #RainforestAB #BuildingTrustBreakingBarriers #techyyc #womenintech

How is your organization managing performative #allyship? In 2017, Susan Fowler sparked tech's #MeToo movement. Six years later, progress remains sluggish. Women Who Tech research found that 42% of women in tech face harassment, and 70% of women founders experience bias in fundraising. 🔍 Why has performative DEI failed? It's seen as a project, not an imperative. 💼 Gen Z demands authentic commitment: 83% prioritize DEI in choosing employers. 💰 Actual capital is crucial. Shockingly, 98.6% of $80 trillion under U.S. management is handled by white men, impacting VC funding. 📊 Accountability matters. New laws in California and potential legislation in Massachusetts aim to drive change. Let's move beyond allyship theater. It's time for genuine action in building an inclusive future for tech. #DEI #TechInclusion #ActionOverWords #womenintech
I'm so incredibly late on this, largely because of an effort to not be "on" as the year closed out, but my amazing partner Allyson Kapin at W Fund wrote a fantastic piece on performative allyship, and why it's been NOT AMAZING for women in tech. This piece was based on research her organization Women Who Tech has been conducting for years. In short: "DEI has historically been viewed as a project, and projects have end dates. It’s never been recognized as an imperative to foster genuine allyship and build truly inclusive practices into the DNA of companies, startups, and funds that empower underrepresented voices, drive innovation, and promote a culture of authenticity." https://lnkd.in/gqiBGJ75

Haloo is grateful to be supported by investors like Allyson Kapin, who wrote this important piece for Fortune on the harms of performative allyship. Please take the time to read. "A new California law will now require diversity reporting for venture capital and private equity firms. Yinka Faleti, a partner at Ascend Venture Capital, told me “I suspect some VC firms are not even tracking this data for themselves in any systematic way. This law would change that. By doing so, I’m hopeful this law will be a catalyst to encourage greater diversity among founding teams of VC portfolio companies,” said Faleti, who also formerly served as executive director of Forward Through Ferguson. Will more states be next? Massachusetts House and Senate are considering an Act Relative to Fair Investment Practices to spur more investment into diverse-led startups and extend workplace sexual harassment and gender discrimination protections to venture capital and investor relationships. Women in tech are tired of being overlooked in favor of allyship theater. As Cindy Gallop of MLNP, put it, “Are you the kind of investor/company that talks about supporting women and underrepresented people in tech, or are you the kind that writes checks?”" #dei #startupfunding #vc
