This May, let's recognize Mental Health Awareness Month by highlighting the importance of mental well-being at work. As employee mental health can significantly impact a company's success, here are 6 strategies they can consider prioritizing mental wellness. Company Culture Transform company culture by integrating mental health care benefits and creating anonymous feedback mechanisms. Direct Feedback Gather feedback from employees about benefits that would improve their mental health, such as childcare or flexible PTO policies. PTO Policies Overhaul PTO policies to support mental wellness by eliminating sick days and implementing flexible PTO. Tech Solutions Explore mental health-care apps and virtual support groups to enhance employee well-being. Local Support Connect employees with licensed therapists in the local community through negotiated contracts with small group therapy practices. Lead By Example Reinforce mental wellness by setting examples like avoiding weekend emails, taking lunch breaks, and emphasizing the importance of sleep. On this World Mental Health Day, we're excited to share the resources and initiatives we have to support our colleagues on their journey to better mental health. Listening and Guiding: We have over 70 Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) based in our hubs and the three larger offices in Kindred. These compassionate individuals are here primarily to listen and guide anyone in need. They serve as trusted allies, ready to lend an empathetic ear and offer assistance when required. Medical Insurance and Virtual Doctor Service: Your health is our priority. Our comprehensive medical insurance covers Most of our employees, including access to a virtual doctor service. With this, you can seek medical advice and consultation from the comfort of your home, ensuring you get the care you need when needed. I have never heard of this service. Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Our EAP is designed to offer confidential and professional support to employees facing personal or work-related challenges. Whether it's stress, relationship issues, or financial concerns, our EAP provides a safe space for you to seek help and guidance. Well-being Allowance: Self-care is essential for maintaining good mental health. That's why we provide a well-being allowance to our employees. You can use this allowance to invest in activities and services that contribute to your overall well-being, from fitness classes to meditation apps or even a spa day for relaxation. CSR Days: We are committed to positively impacting society. We encourage our team members to participate in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities on designated days. Engaging in meaningful community work can be incredibly fulfilling and a great way to boost your mental well-being. Detached Working Options: We acknowledge that working preferences vary from person to person, so we offer detached working options. This allows you to choose the work environment that suits you best. I recently listened to a wellness discussion about gratitude and it’s correlation to positive mental health. For three short days, my sister and niece came to visit. I am thankful for every second I am able to spend with these two. My cup has been filled. When our perverbial cups are full, from whatever fills them, we are far better humans. We show up for ourselves, we are able to concentrate, and make better decisions. This translates to our performance as employees too. Allowing your staff to take personal time is essential to a happy workplace. A workplace that is productive, kind, and able to work together. Take your PTO. Prioritize staff PTO requests. We're on a mission to make Novus a truly great place to work. At the start of 2023, we proudly launched our ‘People Strategy’, which has a strong focus on taking direct action to support our colleagues. We’re celebrating a trio of milestones in our campaign to support and improve colleague wellbeing and health. These include: 1️⃣ Holding open and honest conversations. We’re celebrating having conducted wellbeing focus groups with more than 300 colleagues. 2️⃣ We’ve completed a dozen site visits as part of our #MakeItVisible tour in partnership with the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity where more than 200 people attended. These sessions directly addressed the stigma around mental ill health, as part of our ‘Say It Out Loud’ campaign to encourage colleagues to speak up when they or those around them are struggling mentally. 3️⃣ We have opened up ‘always on’ channels to allow colleagues to contact the People team with any issues at any time, as well as doubling the number of mental health first aiders and launching our ‘You said, we’re doing’ initiative, which sees us take action in response to colleague suggestions for how we can improve wellbeing for all. We’re now set to launch our fourth and final wellbeing awareness month of the year, this time all about personal and professional development.
