A book I co-edited recently is now available on paperback: https://lnkd.in/eYb4zkRq Here is the description: Governing Human Lives and Health in Pandemic Times looks into the instruments and the type of reasoning involved when large-scale social control strategies were implemented worldwide in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The repertoires of institutional and administrative governance tools used during the pandemic are studied in their unique institutional, socio-geographic, and cultural settings, in order to form an understanding of the political climates and the values inscribed in current societal contracts. The book is intended for academic audiences interested in policy research, health governance, and civil societal issues. It will be of great relevance and use for a wide audience of policymakers, public officials, and health care planners as well as students in a broad range of disciplines.

Random assignment studies -- considered the gold standard in research because of the ability to potentially uncover causal relationships -- are common in the health sciences. In recent years, however, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has become a hub for these types of studies for topics in labor economics. SSA's most recent treatment-control study examined whether health and employment services could improve the earnings of individuals who were denied disability benefits by the agency. To SSA's credit, the agency not only released a good analysis report by Westat, but also released a public-use research file that allows the broader research community to study the effects of service provision and earnings outcomes. Today I had the pleasure of meeting and introducing the inspiring Alan Higgins from UCL Institute of Health Equity at the University of Derby Biomedical Sciences & Clinical Sciences Research Theme Showcase. Alan's keynote lecture set the scene for the event perfectly, highlighting the impact of social determinants of health on life expectancy and excess mortality rates in the UK. However, Alan's focus was on what we can do about these issues, how we can influence change, and how we can make hope possible. A call to action for us as a group of researchers to use our research to provide the evidence for policy and practice change. For far too long, learners have struggled to attain academic books that utilize an equity lens. As many of you know, I have been on a mission to develop health equity-focused multidisciplinary books with scholars and community members around the world, as well as revisit existing public health research and scholarship to ensure they are inclusive and forward-thinking. Today, I am thrilled to announce the publication of my latest book with David R. Williams, PhD and Kisha B. Holden, PhD titled, Health Equity: African Americans and Public Health, which was just published by APHA Press. Many thanks to all of our contributors who worked hard to produce this resource. Health Equity offers a unique perspective into the complex dimensions of health inequities as these pertain to African Americans. This book aims to help advance health equity by providing a critical examination of the factors that create, perpetuate, and exacerbate health inequities for African Americans. We hope these findings will serve as catalysts for transforming health outcomes in the United States and across the Globe.
