From today's MorningBrew newsletter and instigator of this post: Stat: If the person next to you at graduation is weeping softly in their cap and gown, it’s not because your student body president’s speech is shockingly poignant. It’s because they, like 99% of other applicants, were rejected from Goldman Sachs’s summer internship. The prestigious investment bank said that just 0.9% of the record 315,000 applications were accepted this year, down from 5% a decade ago and the first time the rate’s been below 1%. JPMorgan’s wealth management internship was similarly cutthroat: The rival financial giant accepted only 4,000 of the 493,000 hopefuls, Business Insider reported. On the bright side, those rejected are no longer required to spend their paychecks on Patagonia zip-up vests.

Meet our Risk Intern, Forrest Jin, student at North Carolina State University, majoring in Financial Mathematics. When asked, "What’s the most rewarding part your internship so far?" Forrest answered: "This internship helps my career goals because I want to pursue a career in risk management, so getting real world experience working in a risk department is a great experience for me. The risk team here is also small, so I can take part in many different aspects of the role, such as monitoring credit risk, calculating RBC requirements, and even model validation, whereas at a larger company I might be pigeonholed into simple tasks." #summerintern #internspotlight #nationalinternday #LGRA #lifeatLGRA

This Summer I had the opportunity to Intern at Northwestern Mutual Farmingdale. Interning at Northwestern Mutual as a Financial Advisor offered a valuable and enriching experience for all interns interested in the world of financial planning and wealth management. This internship program provided me with a unique opportunity to gain insight into the financial services industry and develop critical skills while working alongside seasoned professionals. Here is a summary of the key aspects I learned while being an intern at Northwestern Mutual in this role: Comprehensive Training: Northwestern Mutual is known for its robust training program. As an intern, I was able to receive comprehensive training in financial planning, investment strategies, insurance products, and client relationship management. This foundation equips you with the knowledge needed to assist clients in achieving their financial goals. Real-world Experience: Interns at Northwestern Mutual have the chance to work with real clients and contribute to their financial planning needs. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply the concepts I've learned in training to real-life situations, making my learning practical and relevant. Mentorship: Interns benefit from close mentorship from experienced Financial Advisors. My mentors J.T. Urraro, Matthew Sikoryak and Charles Rainone offered guidance, shared insights, and helped me develop my skills as I progressed through the internship. This mentorship is invaluable for personal and professional growth. Networking Opportunities: Being part of the Northwestern Mutual network opens doors to a vast professional network. I had opportunities to connect with clients, other interns, Financial Advisors, and industry professionals. Business Development: Northwestern Mutual encourages interns to develop their own client base. I had the chance to build relationships with potential clients and work on growing my own practice. This entrepreneurial experience can be a valuable asset if you decide to pursue a career as a Financial Advisor. Career Advancement: Many successful Financial Advisors at Northwestern Mutual began their careers as interns. The internship can serve as a stepping stone for a long and rewarding career in the financial services industry. Life Skills: Beyond financial knowledge, the internship also provides an opportunity to develop essential life skills such as communication, time management, and problem-solving, which are transferable to any career path. In Conclusion, I will be continuing my internship this fall while I pursue my Bachelor's degree from the Binghamton University School of Management with a concentration in Finance. I would like to thank everyone that has helped and supported me throughout the process!

Exciting First Day as an Intern at National Interstate Insurance Company! 🚀 Today marked the beginning of an incredible ten week journey as I start my underwriting internship. Highlights of the Day: Networking: Met my fellow interns, who are an enthusiastic and talented group. Looking forward to collaborating and learning from each other. Employee Interactions: Had the privilege of meeting some of the companies leading employees and executives, who shared their experience and wisdom. Supervisor Introduction: Got to meet my supervisor and see where I will be working day to day. Excited to get started and make meaningful contributions to my department. Education: Interns were taught valuable insurance terminology that employees must use on a day-to-day basis. I am fortunate to be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking organization. There are many lessons, growth opportunities, and challenges that lie ahead!

We have MCIG Co-President John Cook. John worked an investment banking internship at TD Cowen. What was your internship experience? "I had an incredible summer at TD Cowen and was surrounded by hard-working, intelligent individuals. I worked primarily in electric vehicles and renewable energy and am so grateful for the experience I had this summer." Favorite memory? "We had an impromptu happy hour during the second week of the internship that lasted hours. It was a fantastic place to get to know everyone and made the rest of the summer feel like I was working with a group of friends." Skills you learnt from your internship? "Crafting investment thesis, qualitative and quantitative research, understanding company positioning in an industry, financial modeling, financial valuation." Key advice to those recruiting? "Network to meet people, not just to network and "check the box"".
