It's conference season and as you are submitting proposals and designing workshops about diversity and the outdoors, I'd like to offer this perspective: Everyone talks about what they are doing to get more people of color outdoors. No one talks about why people of color choose not to go to the public spaces they manage. When you start with the first question, you ignore the rich history of places like Idlewild and Sag Harbor, the AA CCC, and why park rangers even exist today. When you start with the second question, you are going to learn some uncomfortable truths, like what that back entrance to the park was really for and how the neighbors learn not to camp there overnight. When you start with the second question, you have a real shot at dismantling hidden biases in your orgs policies and making impactful changes. When you start with the first, then you have a bunch of nice pictures for the poster.
