📈 The dramatic growth of forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) for missing persons and criminal casework is changing the face of human identity testing. Depending on the number of DNA markers targeted, FIGG uses different underlying bioinformatic pathways for kinship testing. This leaves many scientists uncertain and perhaps even wary of the process. Our synopsis of the recent paper in FSI:Genetics by Snedecor et al. summarizes the kinship algorithm used for searching ForenSeq Kintelligence profiles in GEDmatch PRO in simple, transparent terms. This is a great tool for any scientist wanting to better understand the options they have for implementing FIGG for their own casework. Today is #WorldDNADay 🧬, and I couldn't let it pass without acknowledging the groundbreaking discovery of the double helix and tremendous accomplishment of completing the Human Genome Project more than 20 years ago. As a chemist whose work has centered on genomics and aiming to realize a sequencing device to bridge bench to beside, I have consistently been in awe and overwhelmingly inspired by the advancements we have today because of these two monumental moments in DNA history.
