Throughout my lifetime (I'm a boomer!), the United States has led the world in the scientific discoveries and technological advances that help us live longer, healthier lives. We’ve also met each moment when the United States — and the world — has faced monumental challenges. What made this all possible? #Science and #technology. It’s why the alliance I co-chair, the Science & Technology Action Committee (STAC), is an ardent supporter of continued strong investment in this area. Since World War II, federal support for science and technology has driven our economy, improved our health, and increased the prosperity of our nation. But it’s all too easy to take such leadership for granted. The problem is if you take your foot off the accelerator, progress doesn’t just keep happening. And if you give up leadership, you can’t always get it back. That’s why STAC developed a report called The State of Science in America to illustrate the steps we must take as a nation to meet the existential threats we face. Importantly, we must meet this moment with the sense of urgency necessary to renew federal support — both in funding and in setting priorities — for the science and technology enterprise in the United States. Our report shows that we’re currently not well organized to meet the challenges ahead of us, from better quality #stemeducation at all levels to a stronger economy and better health for all Americans. That’s why it’s more critical than ever before that our nation’s leaders come together to support a comprehensive national science and technology strategy to guide federal funding and coordination among the 20-plus agencies with scientific missions.
