A week ago today we did something big – something that changes the way we see ourselves, and how others see us. Comms specialists from the Latvian startup ecosystem came together to define a new narrative – one to replace the common phrases that we have inadvertently internalized and repeat, but which don’t leave a good impression about the perspective of the country, and which undermine our success (not to mention ones that can be easily refuted with facts). You know the ones. Instead, we’re replacing them with phrases that we know to be true: - we have incredible startup policies - we have an unusual amount of talented people - we are successful, we just don’t like to shout about it. Over a multiple-hour workshop, this new narrative (read the full narrative in the Labs of Latvia article) was refined and honed by the startup community. It was important that this comes from the community, rather than some higher-up government institution, or some foreign branding specialist. And yes, that meant embracing concepts that speak to the Latvian character. We are “normāli”, we are “small”. And you know? These terms hold a lot of potential in them. I’d be happy to talk to anybody interested and go deeper into each meticulously chosen word in the narrative. What an absolutely fantastic adventure it was to be a part of the Startup Club ZA showcase! Our journey into this world of innovation within the South African tech scene was nothing short of exhilarating. Kudos to the event organizers for seamlessly orchestrating such a gratifying experience. Participating in events of this nature was not something I regularly had on my radar. At times, one becomes so engrossed in their own pursuits, relentlessly pushing forward with their current venture that you forget that there's a whole world of innovation and ideas out there waiting to be explored. Three valuable lessons I took away from the event: 1.      First, I realized that no one in the startup world has all their ducks neatly lined up in a row. It's quite normal to feel like you're adrift in a sea of uncertainty when faced with the myriad challenges that come your way. But here's the revelation: You are not alone. After engaging in spirited conversations with fellow founders and co-founders, it dawned on me that we're all navigating the same turbulent waters fighting our way through. It's okay not to have all the answers , It’s okay to ask for directions – that's what the journey is all about. 2.      Second, the golden rule – never stop pursuing your passion, even in the face of a barrage of "No's". I have heard this saying repeatedly throughout my career and yet I keep thinking everyone has an easier path to success than the one I’am currently on. After having the privilege of chatting with one of the founders at SwiftVee, he shared his tale of persistence. It took him a whopping three years to land his first client. Three years of unwavering dedication, and now they're soaring high, making waves across Africa with their online livestock auctions. It's really a testament to the power of determination and the belief in  your vision. 3.      The most heartwarming realization of the evening was that the startup community is an open, welcoming place. People aren't attending to pass judgment or belittle your venture; they're there to uplift and support. All you need to do is ask and you'll find a treasure trove of valuable information and guidance waiting for you. The event itself was nothing short of spectacular. The venue set the stage for inspiration, and our host Mathew Marsden, was an incredible MC who genuinely cared about every pitch on the lineup. It was evident that he shared our excitement for innovation and entrepreneurship. I want to extend a personal thank you to Startup Club ZA for this incredible experience. The startup journey is all about embracing the adventure! We're eagerly looking forward to the next event, ready to dive back into the world of startups, innovation, and endless possibilities. 

Yesterday, as I watched the Startup Fair from afar, I couldn't contain my excitment upon seeing the extraordinary progress made by Lithuanian startups over the last decade. This trip has undoubtedly been a blessing for Lithuania, and it's easy to see why. The emergence of new players, the presentation of prestigious awards, an influx of innovative solutions, a newfound commitment to transparency, openness, and a spirit of cooperation—these changes paint an exciting landscape for startups. I wonder what the future holds for the progress of the startup ecosystem in Lithuania over the next decade, considering that in the last one, it has grown from just 200 enthusiasts to a thriving community of 18,000 people. The increasing prominence of Lithuanian-origin brands on the world stage is truly amazing. Just one example - Bryan Johnson, an anti-aging technologist who appeared on my morning podcast list this summer, seems to be using the Lithuanian Pulsetto device to improve his sleep quality and effectively manage stress, anxiety, and sleep problems. Already, the rapid growth of startups significantly contributes to Lithuania's positive international image, and I sincerely believe this momentum will strengthen in the future.
