Chemistry can be dirty and dangerous. Solvents, heat, pressure, pollutants. Modern society relies upon the outputs of Big Chem, but it is an industry that is crying out for a shake up. Enter biology. Biology can be fickle, but the (bio)chemistry it catalyses is often gentler and cleaner. So why not just use biology instead? If only it were that simple. In order to harness biology to satisfy the needs of chemistry’s existing end markets, performance and price parity are paramount. The path to parity involves R&D, a relentless focus on commercials and yes, you guessed it, usually First Of A Kind (FOAK) funding and its big sister - Next Of A Kind (NOAK) funding. I wouldn’t say we are close to having an established playbook for FOAK and NOAK, but the news last week about Solugen is a step in the right direction. Solugen, a company that reimagines chemistry using biology, received a conditional commitment for $214M of US government loan financing. I enjoyed reading CTVC’s write-up about Solugen’s news: https://lnkd.in/e8cjFvRt I’ll be watching Solugen’s progress with great interest. As I’m sure deeptech founders and investors around the world will be too. #FOAK #NOAK #Solugen #climatetech #climateVC #biotech #chemistry #climatechange #climatebiotech

Mapping America's Tech Future Center for Strategic & International Studies 21 Mar 2024 CSIS is pleased to announce the launch of a new series of discussions on advanced technology, led by Dr. Dario Gil, Senior Vice President and Director of Research for IBM and a member of the CSIS Board of Trustees. Dr. Gil will lead periodic discussions with technology pioneers in America, bringing insights to the policy community about technologies on the horizon that will have transformative impact on America's economy and society. The inaugural discussion will be with Dr. Dario Gil and Dr. Sudip Parikh, moderated by Dr. John Hamre. Dr. Parikh is the chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Parikh began his career as a macromolecular biochemist, but gradually moved into and to the top of the science policy community in the United States. The focus of the inaugural seminar will be the recently released report The State of Science in America. Dr. Parikh is one of the cochairs of the Science and Technology Action Committee, on which Dr. Gil serves as a founding member. The State of Science in America is a penetrating insight into the true state of scientific inquiry in America. As stated in the preface, "the United States can no longer take its position in the world for granted." For the past 70 years, open science was harnessed to national purposes, creating the most productive enhancement of quality of life and living standards in America and in the world in all of human history. America's leading role is now in question. Dr. Parikh and Dr. Gil will discuss the dynamics of science and technology in America today, and the crucial role that the United States government plays in ensuring a promising future through science.

Paper Publication: Assistant Professor Bryan Watson, P. E.'s paper was recently published in the IEEE Open Journal of System Engineering. Title: Validation of Biologically Inspired Tactics to Increase Multi-Agent System Resilience Description: There is an urgent need to increase multi-agent systems’ resilience. Efforts, however, are hampered by three gaps: current approaches are case study specific, may depend on infrastructure investment, and are often unshared. In response to these needs, we propose 14 biologically inspired Tactics for individual agent design and communication protocols. The Tactics are generalizable and do not depend upon infrastructure investments. The Tactics are applied to a hybrid system dynamic and agent-based model of an electric motor manufacturing supply chain case study. The approach for applying each of the Tactics is clearly described to support future application. Tactic use successfully increased resilience by an average of 6.6%. By reporting a context-neutral solution approach to increase resilience, focusing on agent intervention, and clearly reporting the implementation to a supply chain case study, this article takes an important step toward our goal of using biologically inspired design to increase multi-agent system resilience. Dr. Watson's perspective: "This was a really interesting project because we were able to combine two unlikely areas: eusocial insect behavior and supply chain resilience. I'm excited to see this work published and looking forward to next steps which include partnering with Industry to continue testing." Bryan Watson is an Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering and directs the Biologically Inspired Design-for-Resilience (BID4R) Lab at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. #GoERAU #ERAU_EECS_EXCELLENCE #systemsengineering #BiologicallyInspiredDesign #supplychain #resilience To read the paper yourself: https://lnkd.in/dq5ARev5

Strategic leader who is a designated accountant and risk manager, seasoned in the energy and non-profit sectors.
I am currently on track to completing the Technology Stewardship Practice program (https://lnkd.in/e8ZXFEDs); looking forward to when I can call myself a Tech Steward! You may find renewed purpose in what you are doing by incorporating the ideas of navigating the tension between "Can we do it?" an "Should we do it?" #techstewardship #january2024intake
Strategic leader who is a designated accountant and risk manager, seasoned in the energy and non-profit sectors.
Technology Stewardship in a Changing World With the rise of Generative AI and the challenge of meeting our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there’s never been a greater need for Tech Stewardship. Tech stewardship represents an expanded contribution by the people who are involved in the creation and application of technology towards being the arc of technology towards good. This practice enables individuals to better integrate socio-ethical consideration into their work, and to navigate the tensions that will be faced on this journey, The Tech Stewardship Practice program is a series of reflective exercises designed to help participants launch a Tech Stewardship practice and mindset. This flexible program is design to overlay existing educational and work experiences.
