In a world where scientific breakthroughs shape our future, it is essential to recognize and amplify the voices of women scientists. From pioneering research to groundbreaking discoveries, women have been at the forefront of scientific progress, driving change and inspiring generations. However, the journey does not end with scientific breakthroughs. Effective communication of research results is equally vital to translating scientific knowledge into meaningful action. As we wrap up Women's History Month, let's take a moment to reflect on the journey towards diversity, equity, and inclusion. This month is not just a celebration of women's achievements, but a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create inclusive spaces where every voice is heard, respected, and valued. Together, let's continue to learn, grow, and activate change that resonates beyond this month. We can honor the legacy of our ancestors, like my great-great-great grandmother Angeline Terrell (I posted about her earlier this month), by dedicating ourselves to creating a more equitable world for all. To me, this picture of myself and two intelligent and powerful young women from UWC Maastricht , Elvira and Mercy, at the Microsoft office perfectly represents this mission. #society Excellence by its very nature, albeit facing significant resistance in any society, transcends social divides. The #nobelprize has been at the forefront of diversity and inclusion, including women, since its inception based on excellence, though there may be many deserving and not all may be awarded. Despite excellence in all categories of the Nobels across all social divides, until the politics and economics changes, the belief that the Nobels will benefit humanity will be weak, even though science and technology since the empirical scientific revolution have significantly improved the material well being of humanity. The unresolved angst in literature and peace is symptomatic of how scientific achievement has not yet resulted in humanity coming to terms with the dyonysian human condition. Empirical science bestowed with political power to bring reason to politics may not be the correct path to peace, though critical thinking as in the law with an abiding sense for the complexity and nuance in human nature as in literature as democracies ought to be is perhaps the only pragmatic path to peaceful co-existence.

Now that the UN Biodiversity has a specific #genderequality target as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #GBF (Target 23), there is an window of opportunity for #womeninscience to collaborate more closely with #womeninlaw in order to close the compliance gap in #biodiversity #law. Participating in the IPBES expert group in #policy support tools and methodologies was a rewarding experience. This was a time in which we were only two lawyers in the group. Do you know if the trend has changed and there are now more lawyers including #womenlawyers contributing to IPBES expert groups and assessments? Hearing the voices of women participating in the IPBES processes can be inspiring for women in #STEM but also for women and girls interested in using the law to enact change.
