St. Joseph's Addiction Treatment & Recovery Centers’ Post

NYS Department of Health Commissioner #DrJamesMcDonald was in the North Country this week, first stopping at at St. Joseph's in Saranac Lake to meet with the Citizen Advocates team where he learned about the great collaboration between the two organizations. The meeting sparked an engaging conversation about the challenges facing healthcare providers in our region, and how they are implementing creative solutions to address the social determinants of health. This included conversation about Citizen Advocates Behavioral Health Urgent Care centers across northern New York removing barriers to care with immediate access to mental health and addiction care, no appointment needed, and the development of safe, stable affordable housing at Harison Place in #Malone. Commissioner Dr. McDonald capped his visit by attending the ribbon cutting ceremony for Harison Place – we’re grateful for his attention and the work he and his team are doing on behalf of all healthcare providers throughout New York State.

We’re excited to highlight Olivia (Liv) Pope, a dedicated clinician at Citizen Advocates’ Saranac Lake outpatient clinic, and her impactful work for the inpatient Veteran's Program at St. Joseph’s Addiction, Treatment & Recovery Centers, also located in Saranac Lake. With a background in social work from UAlbany and a passion for one-on-one clinical work, Liv helps veterans build the emotional skills and other supports needed to navigate their recovery journeys. 👐 Liv facilitates group sessions focusing on emotional skill-building, mindfulness and radical acceptance, providing veterans with essential tools to manage their emotions. In the afternoons, she offers personalized counseling, addressing each veteran's unique stressors, traumas and military histories. “It’s vital that we all have space to talk and learn from each other,” Liv shares. “Some of the most valuable skills discussed in class include distress tolerance, radical acceptance, and emotional regulation. All relationships require engaging with other people and learning how to regulate emotional responses. The group prefers to share with one another and likes to get feedback on the work they are doing in class. Because of this, within only a few weeks the group became incredibly close-knit. I am so grateful to be part of this community.” Through the collaboration between Citizen Advocates and St. Joseph’s, Liv’s work demonstrates the impact two treatment providers create by combining resources.
