Dunkin has quite a brand loyalty on the East Coast. I'm curious to see how Dutch Bros expansion plays out. They are certainly popular on the West Coast and have a strong, extremely loyal customer base. It is quite a commitment to their expansion efforts to spend approximately $41M to move 40% of their corporate operations to Arizona in order to support the expansion. “In January 2024 visits to Dutch Bros were 10% higher than in January 2023," the firm reported. Overall industry visited year over year "decreased by 2.7% during the same period.” The quote above stood out to me from the article linked below because discretional spending was high already in Jan. 2023. 10% higher in Jan. 2024 is impressive. Some interesting stats about the continued US Restaurant chain closures In 2024. A mix of underperformance issues, financial pressures from inflation, strategic realignments, changing consumer trends and overall cost-cutting objectives have all contributed to the recent wave of location closures across the United States... #RedLobster currently operates 570 locations and closing 100. #RubiosCoastaGrill closed 48 locations.. #Applebee's has faced numerous closures, shuttering around 300 restaurants since 2017. Last year, the chain closed 46 locations, and this year, Applebee's is bidding farewell to 25 to 35 more locations. #TGIFridays announced the closure of 36 locations. #Denny's shut the doors of 57 restaurants in 2023 and plans to close 10 to 20 locations in 2024. #BostonMarket has closed 273 locations of its 300. #ModPizza shut down 27 locations. #OutbackSteakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, and Bonefish Grill, announced that it closed 41 "underperforming locations. Starbucks recently set a goal for 55,000 locations by 2030, or some 17,000 net units within six years. Call it an average of eight new locations, every day, for 2,190 straight days, or something like that. Either way, a lot of cafes. And now, the path will include 1,000 stores in India. To get there, the java brand will need to open a location every three days in the country. Broadly speaking, making a wide projection, this coming year and the continued wake of the pandemic appears to be an environment ripe for flattish restaurant growth in terms of transactions. But ... it's a world where the large chains stock-piled and prepared for massive growth on the other side. And that's what's starting to take shape, from McDonald's to Starbucks to Domino's, etc.
