SSAI Receives “Commitment to Excellence” Award from Gaywood Elementary School Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) recently received a “Commitment to Excellence” award from Gaywood Elementary School in Seabrook, Maryland, which is one of SSAI’s community partners. As a partner and sponsor of the school, SSAI supports Gaywood through staff appreciation, monetary donations, a school supply drive, a food drive, and holiday donations. SSAI was honored “in acknowledgement of your exceptional contribution to Gaywood Elementary School,” according to the award. “We thank you for your service and dedication.” Gaywood, like SSAI, takes education seriously. The school is committed to ensuring that every Gaywood Mustang lives up to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which administrators promote: “Intelligence plus character – that is the true goal of education.” SSAI strives to live up to these words and goals, too, through partnering with schools and promoting education at all levels through various academic programs. This was SSAI and BFF’s 29th year of the scholarship program, in which they award scholarships to talented and well-rounded students to enable their access to quality education and empower them to pursue their dreams. 🎉 Exciting times at Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI)! 🎉 SSAI interns in our EXPLORE (Experience Learning & Observing Real-world Education) corporate internship program introduced themselves recently to each other nationwide. This program offers college and high school students, as well as early career professionals, the chance to work on real-world assignments while shadowing experienced professionals. We are thrilled to have all the interns join the SSAI family! This event was hosted by our Explore Program leads, Josie Pearson, Director of Organizational Development, and Kaitlin Pommert, Organizational Development Specialist who have been hard at work to ensure the internship program kick-off is a resounding success! During the event, we had warm welcomes and introductions from SSAI executives starting with our CEO, Dr. Shilpa Bahethi, MD. Interns shared their names, university affiliations, degree focuses, and meaningful experiences or aspirations. We are proud to have such a diverse group of interns from various backgrounds and degree paths. Upcoming exciting events and activities were also discussed such as the opportunity to participate in professional development and other workshops. SSAI PACE Satellite Mission Employees Honored with NASA Achievement Awards Leland Chemerys, a Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) PACE (NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) satellite mission) Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) Systems Engineer, was awarded a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Agency Outstanding Public Leadership Medal for his support of OCI, which is PACE’s main instrument. Also, the PACE OCI Team received a Group Achievement Award. NASA’s PACE mission conducts satellite observations of global ocean biology; aerosols, which are tiny particles in the atmosphere; and clouds. PACE accesses the health of the world’s oceans by measuring the distribution of phytoplankton, which are tiny plants and algae that sustain marine food systems. PACE also studies main aspects of the atmosphere associated with air quality and Earth’s climate. The OCI is a highly-advanced optical device that is used to measure properties of light in portions of Earth’s electromagnetic spectrum. Data about ocean colors are essential to climate studies. The color of the ocean is determined by the interaction of sunlight with substances present in seawater, such as chlorophyll, which is found in most phytoplankton species. By monitoring these areas, the OCI helps to understand the diverse systems that drive ocean ecology. The OCI was built at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland. A fantastic first charity golf outing for the foundation! We were blessed with perfect weather, and the day was filled with golf, laughter, and good energy. Our heartfelt thanks go to the BFF team for their exceptional planning of this incredible event. Special appreciation goes to our Director, Caitlyn Dreux, who dedicated countless hours over the past few months to organize this event.
