Incentives escalation is the neverending story. They should not be the only deciding factor as the local incentive program can be complemented by other location, geostrategic, logistics and labour advantages. California needs a new strategy and innovative vision in face of the advent of AI production to attract production again.

California has lagged in offering competitive tax incentives compared to other regions. The U.K. recently introduced a 40% corporate tax relief for studio facilities and additional incentives for independent films and visual effects. High production costs in L.A. are driven by expensive locations and substantial overhead, particularly for permits and logistics. Despite world-class facilities, competition for studio space in L.A. leads to higher prices and availability issues. The U.K. has rapidly increased its studio space, doubling in recent years, and Canada continues to invest in state-of-the-art facilities, capitalizing on global content demand. Proposed Solutions: Increase tax credits and offer targeted incentives. Streamline permits and subsidize location fees. Incentivize local vendor usage. Negotiate flexible contracts and reduce fees for new members and lower-budget projects. Invest in studio space and support virtual production technologies.

The popularity of co-operatives, building societies and mutual societies (like us) has grown, with the sector currently said to bring in a combined annual income of £87.9 billion. That's according to the recently published Co-operative and Mutual Economy 2023 report, which was published by Co-operatives UK. The report suggests a growing interest in what it calls 'the democratic economy', with member-owned businesses, such as mutual societies, claiming a combined total of more than 74 million memberships. #CooperativeUK #MutualSocieties #Economy

I’m all for tax relief for the arts, and incentives such as Universal Basic Income to support artists. However, we must be careful not to replicate colonial models and instead future proof the arts by responding to the Climate and Ecological Emergency. There is great need to develop strong local culture, that respects the diversity of First Nations people, and promotes understanding across the Asia Pacific region, built on cultural exchange. How many large scale live shows on in Australia now showcase Australian content and our unique lived experiences? There is already a huge disparity between the cost of large scale productions and starving independent scenes. This is a reality in the UK where many regional arts centres are struggling and the West End is increasingly influenced by USA producers because producing is cheaper in Uk than on Broadway. To honour our national cultural policy we need systems informed approaches to making change, that other sectors are leading with, and reimagine how the performing arts can become more sustainable in every way. #culturematters #culturetakesaction #netzero2030

So, the manifesto’s are in. 📚 Given the fiscal narratives surrounding the two major parties this election, it was never going to be a week of crazy surprises. But what does it all mean for the creative industries sector? 🔵 The Tories commit to launching a review of the night-time economy to reverse the decline of pubs and nightclub closures - something which they inextricably blame Labour for. 🔴 Labour will develop a creative industries sector plan as part of their Industrial Strategy, though it isn’t clear what this will include. 💚 💛 The Greens, Liberal Democrats and Labour all promise improved EU touring arrangements for musicians - so at least there is some cross-party consensus! The big omissions? - No immediate support for the live music ecosystem. - No commitments to address licensing and governance issues in the night time economy. - Unsurprisingly, no commitments to reduce VAT for the hospitality sector. One thing is certain, there is plenty for industry and campaign groups to push for in the post-General Election landscape.
