It's ironic that over the past few decades, philanthropic endowments in the US have grown dramatically, with private foundation assets now totaling $1.1 trillion. Yet, during this same period, the racial wealth gap has significantly widened. Foundations can't afford to sit this one out. If you're unsure where to begin, the new Bridgespan article and report on philanthropy's role in narrowing the racial wealth gap offer incredible ideas and insights. Kudos to Devin Murphy, Zachary Slobig, and the entire team for your outstanding work. Thank you!

💡Generational attitude differences could impact legacy decisions - study New research has revealed important differences in the behaviours and attitudes towards legacy giving of the baby boomer generation (born 1945-1964) compared to Generation X (born 1965-1980), which could help charities better steward supporters into the future. A powerful roadmap. "As the baby boomer generation passes away, an estimated $84 trillion is projected to be passed down to heirs, with some $16 trillion transferred in the next decade alone. To put that in perspective, that’s 43 percent more than what it would take to eliminate the entire Black-white wealth gap. Rather than reinforcing the nation’s inequity, philanthropy could leverage this wealth transfer to set a new path. Of course, philanthropy’s role in reparations is not to replace the federal government in providing the scale of redress and racial healing the nation needs. Nor are philanthropic grants to Black-led organizations reparations. However, there is a massive opportunity for philanthropy to abundantly resource the ecosystem of organizations working to advance reparations as well as build a culture of repair that centers the healing, wellbeing, and safety of Black people. For funders who believe in racial equity and aspire to a thriving multiracial democracy, we invite you to see reparations for Black people and building a culture of repair as a necessity to reach that goal." https://lnkd.in/ebXggDxd

Philanthropic networks are not immune to the effects of hate and extremism that have permeated modern politics. Fortunately, some organizations, such as the Council on Foundations, are taking a proactive approach to the problem. The linked document below is not only an excellent primer on the topic, but it also offers some practical recommendations to help grantmakers navigate the funding landscape. Just how serious is the problem? Here's a quote from the white paper: "...in the wake of deadly neo-Nazi violence in Charlottesville, journalists and advocacy groups have traced the funding of extremist groups in an attempt to understand the growth of these movements. This analysis revealed that millions of dollars in foundation funding flows to extremist organizations, sometimes without the knowledge, and contrary to the values, of foundation leaders." Values-aligned philanthropy is one way for organizations to prevent inadvertently funding groups bent on spreading hate. #grantwriting #philanthropy #values

With each passing year, the #millenial generation continues to occupy a larger share of the American workforce. I authored the following column for the #UniversityofFlorida Advisor Network to inform practitioners and educational institutions of the important position that millennials will occupy as part of the pending #GreatWealthTransfer. My article touches on giving trends among millennials, as well as three ways millennials can begin to give back to their alma maters to make an immediate impact at a relatively young age. #itsgreatuf #plannedgiving #estateplanning #philanthropy #sec #giftplanning #charity #financialplanning #wealthmanagement
