Amazon Prime launching their ad-supported tier means all the big streaming players are now offering an ad-supported option. The difference with Amazon Prime is current users will be automatically placed into the ad-supported tier, so users will have to pay more than they are currently to remain ad-free. Amazon Prime is estimated to generate more than $2 billion in incremental ad revenue this year as a result of their ad-supported strategy. The introduction of ads allows Amazon Prime to incorporate "shoppable TV" in which viewers can directly purchase products seen on the TV. Rather than the TV being the place to spotlight brands it could compel people to act on more impulsive purchasing decisions. Re-training consumers to shop from their TVs will take time and how quickly consumers take to this way of shopping will be a big factor in how much of a success the introduction of the ad-tier subscription model is for Amazon Prime
