11:09:2023 Dear #LinkedIn Connections, 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻! As the spring semester drew to a close earlier this year, I found myself facing the delightful yet challenging task of deciding how to make the most of my summer break. While one might assume that this decision would be a breeze, it turned out to be quite a puzzle, mainly because I had a multitude of enticing options before me. After careful consideration, I ultimately chose to embark on a summer internship with Vitroflora — a decision I now reflect upon with great satisfaction. Vitroflora stands as one of Europe's foremost producers of perennials and plant nurseries, renowned for its commitment to delivering top-quality plant nurseries. Although the choice to join Vitroflora presented some challenges, particularly due to its Polish roots and my limited proficiency in the Polish language, I refused to let my apprehensions hold me back. I recognized that stepping out of my comfort zone was an essential part of my personal and professional growth. My ability to conquer those fears stemmed from my determination to see the positive aspects and opportunities within the situation. Consequently, I embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly. This decision was further bolstered by the glowing recommendations from one of my most esteemed lecturers, Prof. Bozena. In my pursuit of acquiring technical expertise in #horticulture and gaining hands-on experience in the production of plant nurseries within a #cea-powered system, I willingly ventured beyond my comfort zone. This choice has undoubtedly ranked among the best decisions I've made this year. As the saying goes, 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥. 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘯𝘦'𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘧𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘵, 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘤𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Amidst my work responsibilities, I also ensured to strike a balance by taking moments to relish the sea breeze and savor the beauty of nature through short vacations and excursions. The most significant takeaway from my summer of 2023 will undoubtedly be the opportunity to learn from an entirely different perspective. Having spent a considerable amount of time in the academic realm, it felt only natural to gain insights from the industry side, with the ultimate aim of bridging the gap between theory and practice. Viewing the horticultural industry from this fresh lens has enriched my understanding of its intricacies and highlighted the disparities between academia and industry practices. I am optimistic that the knowledge I've gained will prove invaluable as I continue my journey in the field of Controlled Environment Horticulture. Cheers to an amazing Autumn season 🍂 🍂🍂! ~YourfavoriteHorticulturist🌹 . . . ___ #summer2023 #summerinternship #linkedinpost #journalingjourney #journaling #agritech

Something that sets the ag + western industry apart from other industries is the amount of internship opportunities there are that are based around events. Whether those events are livestock shows, fairs, rodeos, or conventions, there is a great opportunity for both interns and employers to gain value from an event-based internship. In this ⬇️ blog post, you will hear from industry professionals (Meg Drake Stopps, Gary Hawkes, Tyler K. Schuster) who oversee and manage different event-based internships hopefully encouraging you to think about creating an internship for your next event! https://lnkd.in/gniqVksU

How easy is it to have a career in rewilding? Want to hear about how we at Ecosulis can help kick-start your career in rewilding? Britta Wicks Assoc CIPD spoke to Countryside Jobs Service about how our internship programme, which is now in its second year, helps avoid the ‘one size fits all approach’. Britta explains how our internship programme can help successful applicants see first-hand “how every role impacts our efforts to deliver our company vision of rewilding half the planet by 2050. Our vision is embedded throughout the business, and every team member feels particularly passionate about striving to deliver it.” In an industry where it can often seem you have to have a certain amount of experience or connections to be considered ‘worthy’, as Britta explains “breaking into the rewilding sector does not have to be a difficult journey, providing you know the right places to look.” Programmes like the Ecosulis internship “are essential to growing talent in the rewilding sector, and we are committed to fostering an approach that shares knowledge and broadens the availability of roles within our wider industry.” Spring will mark the launch of the Ecosulis internship, to keep up to date with the launch of this check our website and LinkedIn. Ecosulis are often approached by graduates or individuals, eager to start their journey in the rewilding sector but a recurring theme has emerged around feeling the pressure to accumulate a certain number of voluntary experiences to be considered ‘worthy’. “We understand the daunting nature of entering a new industry, and have purposefully designed roles, programs, and requirements to dismantle these perceived barriers.” - Britta Wicks Assoc CIPD Their programme has been so effective, that they are now starting to collaborate with Further Education providers to develop a similar initiative for site-based roles! The 🍅 stories. A series about growing fruit and people. This one is about the value of internships. When I first started growling tomatoes I’d go to the nursery and buy my plants. But often some failed and others produced little fruit. Today I grow all my tomatoe plants from Heirloom seeds. I care for each plant, thining, pruning and carefully transitioning them outside. Now, none of my plants fail. This makes me think about the challenges hiring early career professionals. We both tried our best but often, it didn’t work out. If I’d instead invest in a few interns we would have built a relationship from the start, snipping and pruning each other, so we both got the results we’d hope for. If you 👍 this 🍅 story please share and repost! #internships.

Nice pic! Quirky internships "dressed like Pa Ingalls", part-time jobs, responsibilities outside of athletic/extracurricular commitments bring about priceless growth as the brain stretches to learn new skills, self-regulation and even ruling out J-O-B-S originally thought to be a perfect fit for one's strengths/interests/major. Working a summer internship with children of migrant workers helped me understand challenges for one's education being disrupted by regular geographical moves across the country more than selfishly developing my fluency in Spanish= priceless insight and empathy for student academic progress while revealing my hidden biases. Of course, any student who can have MORE than one internship in order to build a network and help secure best-fit professional employment upon college graduation is an area that #highered MUST prioritize. We must take extra care to support #firstgen students in this area. Why not have widespread mentoring to connect all students in all majors to the world of work? How can K-12 education join the #career pipeline so more families value and see the #ROI of college degrees?
I build customized storytelling machines to engage audiences for higher ed, edtech and nonprofits. Message me for a client case study with measurable results.
My summer internship in college was working oxen while dressed like Pa Ingalls. Not exactly preparation for a career in digital marketing. Actually, the world wide web hadn’t been invented yet, so nothing was specific preparation for digital marketing. This was at Living History Farms in Des Moines, a museum of the history of farming in the midwest. If you’ve been to Colonial Williamsburg, you get the idea — historical reenactors dressed in costume, doing actual work from that era to some degree and pausing to explain it to visitors. We yoked the oxen up for farm work, trained steers, weeded the corn by hand every day, milked the cow in the morning, brought the chickens in from the woods each night and took the slop out to the hogs. We harvested the wheat with sickles, and we put down a few animals. (Kristi Noem would have loved it.) For this I got college credit, some sketchy housing, a small stipend and a fantastic daily lunch. It was cooked over the cabin’s open hearth by the female interns. It’s hard to say if that was down to the sexual division of labor in the 1990s or 1850s. Despite the lunch and the stipend, I was starving. I took a night job washing dishes at a diner where I snuck bites of food out of trays in the walk-in cooler. I loved that summer internship, but the thing is . . . I'm not a historian, and I wasn’t a history major. In fact, I only took one history class in college (not on farming but on Maimonides!). I was too obsessed with literature to find time for much else. I found this internship by scanning the bulletin board in the commons looking for some way to avoid going home for the summer, and I applied directly. I didn’t consult any faculty or career services office. This internship had no 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 impact whatsoever on my career. It just kept me busy for a summer and gave me some fun stories. Whether it had an 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 impact is something I'll have to think about. I recently saw a post from Patrick Methvin from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation using the term “random acts of dual enrollment.” The experience high school students get isn't as strategic as it could be. The same could be said of college internships -- too random and disconnected from career. Brandon Busteed recently made a similar point on the Trusted Voices podcast with Erin Hennessy and Teresa Valerio Parrot,. He said the handoff from academic work in #highered to the #career is happening, but it needs to be more intentional, and it needs to be scaled up. My sense is that momentum is building in this area. There are more conversations about aligning college and career and more intermediaries emerging to help faculty, students and employers. I haven't used my ox driving skills or even my historical reenactment skills much since then. I loved it, like I say, but I'm glad we're moving into an era with a little more strategic direction for today's students. Did your #internship make strategic sense? Let’s hear some stories!
