📢 A call to action for philanthropy: "We don't need you pretending that you don't have the power that you have." -Maurice Mitchell of Working Families Party at this year's Northern California Grantmakers annual conference. 💡 The theme of this year's conference was Imagine and Act. I had the opportunity to learn from some of the most powerful speakers I've ever heard, alongside colleagues from Tides and hundreds of other practitioners in philanthropy. My biggest takeaway is that if we want to truly shift power in the field, we need to come to terms with the fact that the billions of dollars harbored in philanthropy are not ours to control. It is impossible to amass that much wealth without extraction; therefore, we must see it as our duty to return assets to the communities to whom they have always belonged. Doing so requires us to shift our mindsets and our practices. Luckily, there are resources like Movement Generation Justice and Ecology Project's Just Transition framework to help us along the way.

This past weekend I celebrated my four year anniversary with Trees Atlanta! Time flies when you’re planting trees! That’s the saying right? So to celebrate here Is a DATA ROUNDUP of the organization and my 22-23 planting season! As well as some favorite photos! Trees Atlanta planted a total of 8,518 trees, grasses, and shrubs! The NeighborWoods program planted a total of 4,972 trees! I planned and planted a total of 1,487 trees! I planted 702 overstory (canopy) trees and 743 understory (smaller) trees! (This needs some improvement) The trees I planned were planted with the efforts of countless volunteers over the course of 25 projects I led. I engaged volunteer numbers ranging 5 people up to 120 people! It’s such an awesome job to help preserve the urban canopy of Atlanta every day, and to have the whole city as your office. Looking forward to what the future holds! #environment #nonprofit #trees #treesatlanta #climatechange #volunteers #volunteersmakeadifference #atlanta #plants #trees #volunteermanagement #volunteerengagement #planting #conservation #education

We can't walk alone to solve the big issues of the day. For Earth Gives, we exist to build community - a community that rallies around the many solutions needed on #climatechange and stewardship for the #environment. There is no one way. There are many ways. Centering our connectedness through the work in all of the many solutions is our true hope. While we work to tackle systems and invite in more people to our community, we are first welcoming 501c3 working in #climatejustice #environment #wildlife #climatechange to join us in a US-wide giving day. Powering up your work with people, with resources, with connection to the greater ecosystem is the start. There are two weeks left to register. It's not about what this makes possible just for your nonprofit. It's about what this makes possible for all of us, going together, as solution providers. Because we know, there is no winning on these issues unless we all advance our impact with and through community. If this serves your dreams and hopes for your organization and your team, and how to be in the world, join us: https://lnkd.in/gufU7HkQ 🌎 #love #community #wildlife #nature #commoncause #earth #generosity #philanthropy #love #Community #connection #solutions #climateaction

This is where it all started. Earth Gives' executive director was part of the founding of Arizona Gives Day. Year's later, she turned greater attention to climate. When she researched how much philanthropy was directed to the environment, her jaw dropped. How could only 2% of all funding be going to the most consequential issue of our time? With two kids, she knew she had to be part of the solution. So, of course, we join Arizona Gives Day to bring more resources into our budget so we can turn around and do the same for environmental nonprofits across the US. You can start here: https://lnkd.in/e4EzjYG8 Yet don't stop there. There are plenty of great environmental nonprofits also featured at azgives🌍org. And we believe there is no one solution, but many. Now we need the "many" of you. If you choose Earth Gives as one nonprofit where you will invest, we would be honored. Arizona Gives Day runs March 12-April 2. 🌎 Give. Share. Invite the others. Together, more is possible. #LateristooLate #generosity #environment #climate #climatejustice #wildlife #AZGives

FFCF's Capacity Grant Program invested its largest dollar amount to date, providing nearly $70,000 to six powerful projects across the country. The 2023 grantee partners are unique in their histories, stories, and complexities, but are all grounded in the same values of building power, changing systems, and bringing forward the often untold and erased stories of communities and farmers of color. This year's projects take us from Santa Ana, California, where a detailed research and data entry project will make public, for the first time, the injustices that occurred during World War II's farm seizures from Japanese Americans; to Louisiana's Cancer Alley, where activists fight industrial harms around their homes, on their farms, and at their ancestors’ burial grounds; and much more! https://lnkd.in/e_6GPRJZ #BIPOCPhilanthropy #BIPOCFarmers #EnvironmentalJustice #FoodSystemsChange

Bringing values to life in ways that are meaningful for everyone involved with a nonprofit organisation can be a difficult balancing act. Yet, Catalyst’s Ecology Peers are achieving notable successes in this respect. A few noteworthy examples are: ✔ Huddlecraft’s 9-day fortnight and community emphasis ✔ Rad HR’s ongoing commitment to digital accessibility ✔ Outlandish Co-operative’s sustainability-focused workshops, prioritising people as well as the planet Find out more about how Catalyst might bring these values to life, in our roundtables report https://lnkd.in/esYY5vbq #Roundtables #ValuesLed #Nonprofits Alt text: An animated man appears to be juggling apples. The text reads “Bringing operational values to life for everyone involved can be a juggling act. Watch out for our Roundtables report to see how our Ecology Peers are succeeding.”

The Ocean Writer | I write stories about cool 🐠🦈🐳🦀⛵🔬🌊 | Freelance marine science, conservation & sustainability writer available for commissions
Took a little longer than I wanted to add this all up (because a - maths, b - BUSY and c - managed to muck up my website and lose the impact tracker page... FAIL! Huge thanks to the team at Green Hosting for helping me get it back!) OK, anyway. The Ocean Writer's first year of business is complete (woop) which means it's time to track my first year's impact and see how it compares with previous years (as a sole trader). 💙 13 great clients: some I'd worked with before and some new (all lovely) 🎁 7 days of pro bono support, volunteering & citizen science (down on last year's stonking 12.5 days but still respectable I think!) 💰 1.57% of my income donated to good causes... creeping up from 1.2% the previous year (wahoo) 🌿 That includes enough donations to Project Seagrass to fund 2,251 seagrass seeds (also up from last year) 🌴 1,407 trees planted (up on the previous year's 1,163 but likely to fall next year) ✏️ 23 petitions signed (down on 22-23's 35 petitions boo... hopefully I can increase again this year) For the full spiel, check out the roundup blog 👇 & gimme tips/ideas to keep improving in 2024-25 please! https://lnkd.in/d37iiSQw

Hi all! It's #GivingTuesday and I want to highlight a few organizations that I am a proud board member of. If I've ever had a positive impact on you or worked with you in some beneficial way, I am simply asking you to give them a moment of your time to consider how you (or others in your network) might support them (whether monetarily, with your time, or by amplifying their critical areas of work). 1. Greenpeace - An internationally recognized environmental organization that has evolved in ways I could not have imagined when I was introduced to environmentalism in 2007. Most definitely, this is not your "father's Greenpeace." When I think about fighting corporate interests in the most courageous ways, it's impossible not to think about GreenPeace USA. 2. Ecology Center, Berkeley - The organization that "raised me" and that I've been working with since I was 16. I got my first taste of policy work and community organizing via the Ecology Center. This organization played the most significant role in gearing me up to thrive through my legal education. Forever grateful. 3. Community Works West - As a former juvenile offender and a member of a family that was impacted by incarceration through multiple stages of my life, I am inspired by CWW's commitment to restorative justice and the re-entry work that CWW continues to steward for families. 4. Sankofa Impact - Sankofa Impact strives to highlight how "everyday people" are truly "everyday activists." By taking 15+ trips to the south over the last decade or so, Sankofa Impact has changed the lives of thousands who were willing to confront this country's history of racism and equip everyday activists with the inspiration + knowledge to fight for a transformative and liberated future. Even while in law school (where my time feels so limited in ways I never imagined I'd experience) I feel compelled to stay tethered to all four of these organizations in a meaningful way. I hope some of you will support any one of these four organizations on #GivingTuesday. You can start with giving them just a bit of your time to learn more about their respective areas of work (and of course, consider any donations you are able to make). #Godspeed

When you read something, you have an interpretation of it. Everyone brings along the lens through which they have lived life, what's happened to them, information they've consumed, and the values that inspire them. We're going to interpret this saying for today as the nonprofits, volunteers, board members, supporters, donors, and those who amplify their work in all kinds of ways as being at the 💚. When we amplify that heart, we see the 🌎 nurtured, the people protected, and the profit being the clean air, water, and land we live on, the adventures we take our families on, the life we dream of for ourselves and our kids. When the entire earth gives, we all win. If you represent a 501c3 that works towards such missions, we invite you to join others in sharing their early interest in participating in Earth Gives Day 2024 - 25 days of inviting people to invest in and engage with all kinds of missions across the spectrum of planet and people protection! (Plan for early September through Oct 1.) https://bit.ly/49zyAIF YOU are welcome! #earthgives #earthgivers #philanthropy #volunteers #climateaction #environment #climatejustice #wildlife

SUNDAY AFTERNOON (SUNDAY JUNE 18TH) at 12:00 PM our amazing Who I Am Foundation #Volunteers in #SantaFe will be cleaning up the community once again! For this Community Clean-Up (Santa Fe), our volunteers will be meeting up at La Montañita Food Co-op, located at 913 W Alameda St, Santa Fe, NM 87501 NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. Volunteering as a means to help conserve and protect the environment has a lot of upsides. Of course, the first is that you’ll be taking care of our planet, and it badly needs a little love given the myriad ways in which we’ve become adept at destroying it. But beyond that, volunteering for a cause you care about is a great way to meet like-minded people, make friends, and pull yourself out of the blues that sometimes accompany caring a lot about something important – especially if you feel alone in your endeavors. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. Some research even shows that a nice-looking neighborhood promotes good behavior. Join us in keeping your #Community clean! For more information: https://lnkd.in/grSshnrT #TeamWhoIAm_SantaFe
