Our team recently introduced a new robotic paint system to Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc., which we developed in our Automation Lab in Columbus, IN. During the presentation, we not only showcased the capabilities of the FANUC America Corporation robots and Graco IniFlex and Probell systems with a spray demonstration, but also provided a hands-on experience. The GPM production engineers, robot programmers, and maintenance engineers had the opportunity to simulate production operations, familiarize themselves with operating the machinery, and even learn programming techniques. These state-of-the-art systems will be installed at Great Plains Manufacturing's new production facility in Salina, Kansas, later this fall.

This semester I am pleased to present the major project for 3026. After weeks of planning and assembly my team and I were able to demo our final system. We integrated high-level software with hardware to build a PLC system controlling a piston through pneumatic valves operating through inputs from limit switches and buttons to control the system and pistons. The initial solution was modelled after a high-level sorting system, much like an autonomous warehouse. The journey was challenging, but the experience of learning to manage the development of a complex project with limited resources and the demand for an agile approach in assembly will be valuable for utilising future projects. #engineeringdesign #pneumatics #macquarieuniversity #innovationindesign #engineering

One of the biggest questions we hear is "how hard is the software to learn"? I always joke if you can handle ALL those CNC buttons the UR pendant is a piece of cake! 😏 Truthfully, I'm not the person you want willy-nilly pushing buttons on your CNC machine, but my first time using the teach pendant, I was able to program a basic pick-&-place sequence in under 45min. It's that easy! The Universal Robots pendant uses PolyScope software that can make complex automation simple. It functions similar to an app allowing you to program your waypoints without complex coding. Although daily application is extremely user-friendly the initial integration process can be challenging for first time users.
