Soccer ⚽️ has seen growth 📈, however there’s much more work to be done in the U.S. I’d like to challenge the notion that the work is done and we can “rest on our laurels”. I took the average attendence numbers and the average population (including metro areas of the cities where the clubs are present) in Major League Soccer and compared it to the Belgian pro league which ranks #12th in terms of attendance/crowd average in Europe. Soccer in Belgium is rooted deeply in society and has been around much longer, but remember to be the best, u have to compare yourself to better leagues. MLS (🇨🇦 and 🇺🇸) average population: 4.7M (29 teams) with ~23K average attendance Jupiler Pro league average population: 400k (16 teams) with 10.5k average attendance This tells you there’s room for major improvements! Population in MLS is 10x when the attendance is only ~2.2X KAS Eupen has a population of 19k with an average attendance of almost 3k, that is amazing! 🤩 it’s not about 10x 20x here because obviously there’s a seating capacity for stadiums/arenas, however this begs the question of how we sustain the league in a way that attracts viewership on and off the field, but more importantly BUILDS soccer in this country? Remember attracting stars like Messi, Ibrahimovic, Beckham etc… are temporary fixes which temporarily improves attendance/viewership, but what are we doing in terms of true soccer relationships between club-country-community, how do we get soccer in the top 3 sports in the US, youth academies, community engagement? Remember NASL - North American Soccer League also attracted big stars, but clearly that was not enough to build a sustainable league… so what are the lessons learned, what will we do differently for the future of the sport? ⚽️ Royal Belgian Football Association U.S. Soccer Federation https://lnkd.in/esEHbHsb

As the first round of Copa America games wraps up, it's surprising to see the low attendance at the tournament. The sparse crowds have even drawn complaints from players like Weston McKennie of the US men's national team about the lackluster stadium atmosphere. For instance, the USA's home game attracted only 47,873 fans in a stadium with a capacity of over 80,000. While soccer is rapidly growing in popularity in the US, this indicates there is still significant progress to be made. One of my theories for the low attendance is the high ticket prices, ranging from around $75 plus fees to over $800. Given that the primary audience for this tournament is the Hispanic community, which has an average income of $62,800 (Statista Research Department, 2024), these prices may be prohibitively expensive. To address these issues, more targeted marketing and adjusted pricing strategies tailored to the demographic could have boosted attendance. It's easier to fill stadiums when star players like Messi are on the field but for games featuring less well-known teams, a more inclusive approach might be needed. For example, I still have in my mind the almost empty stadium at the Ecuador vs Venezuela game. The marketing strategy for a Copa America in the US needs to be different from that of a World Cup. While the World Cup draws global attention and can attract large crowds based on its prestige alone, Copa America requires a more focused effort to engage the local audience. This includes targeted promotions, community outreach, and accessible pricing to ensure higher attendance and a more vibrant atmosphere. Addressing these challenges now provides a tremendous opportunity to refine strategies ahead of the 2026 World Cup, ensuring better engagement and turnout for all soccer events hosted in the US. I would love to read some of your thoughts about it! References Mishra, A. (2024, June 24). Usmnt vs Bolivia’s attendance numbers lead to fans’ outrage- Copa America 2024. Congratulations to Major League Soccer #MLS for a record-breaking 2023! The arrival of one of the best players of all time, Lionel #Messi boosted many of MLS's KPIs exponentially in 2023. Here are just a few of the key performance metrics that Messi shot up in 2023: Attendance. The league set records for attendance in 2023. A record 82,110 fans attended the “El Trafico” showdown at the Rose Bowl between local archrivals LA Galaxy and LAFC. The 4th of July clash recorded the highest attendance of a stand-alone MLS match in the league’s history. Overall for the entire 2023 MLS season, a total of 10,900,804 fans attended matches, for an average of 22,111 per match, both all-time records. [https://lnkd.in/efGpQpHV] News media coverage and social media impressions. Messi's arrival to Inter Miami yielded prominent and substantial news media coverage for the league from the nation’s most influential news media outlets, from USA Today to the New York Times, to many TV and cable news networks in the country and just about everything in between both in the United States and around the world. The news coverage about all Messi-related activities in MLS was comprehensive in quality and quantity. Who in the United States, and around the world, does not know that Messi is here, I ask? That is the common sense metric to measure his news media attraction prowess. In terms of social media, following his arrival, interactions spiked across MLS’ social media accounts (Twitter by 1125%, Instagram by 517%, and Facebook by 2488%). Additionally, 22 million of the 24 million followers MLS has gained since last season have come since Messi’s arrival was announced in June. https://lnkd.in/e2UxQFFR Coinciding with Messi’s arrival, the league announced a deal with #Apple that provides the league a global platform to broadcast matches. Apple’s $2.5 billion, 10-year worldwide deal with MLS streams all the games live, with no blackouts, across Apple devices in 100+ countries. https://lnkd.in/eyWn7vK9 MLS Commissioner Don Garber summed the Messi impact succinctly when he spoke with USA Today. “With Messi, every game is almost like the Super Bowl, with the celebrity presence and the global media presence,” Garber said. https://lnkd.in/eFfM9dZq The next few years, 2024 through 2026, will bring even more global attention to the United States soccer market. Copa America (2024), the FIFA Club World Cup (2025), CONCACAF Gold Cup (2025) - and, of course, the biggest futbol-soccer tournament of them all -the 2026 #FIFA #WorldCup- will all be played in the United States. 👍 ⚽

The USA are hosting the #CopaAmerica this summer, offering a unique opportunity for #soccer betting ⚽ Major international tournaments offer sportsbooks a huge opportunity to capture the imagination of fans, and operators require robust platforms to keep up with this demand Jonathon Hurst, Head of Soccer at Kambi spoke to Charlie Horner about their strategy and plans for CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 Some key quotes 🔑 🗣 "The Copa America tournament offers a unique opportunity for the Kambi network in the Americas, particularly in Latin America where our partner network continues to expand" 🗣 "Over the course of the last year, the popularity of soccer continues to grow strongly in the U.S. Much of that could be attributed to the arrival of Lionel Messi playing for MLS club Inter Miami. Since heading there last July, we have seen a 50% increase in the number of bets on the MLS." 🗣 "Kambi’s extensive experience with major sporting events, combined with our adept pre-match and live trading team, equips us to handle complex scenarios effectively. Kings League is an upstart 7-a-side football league established in 2022 by FC Barcelona legend Gerard Piqué Bernabéu. The league's first year was a huge success and now.. they've just launched the "Kings Leagues Americas" ! The inaugural season of Kings League received a whopping 80 million hours ~ of watch time. The 2023 final drew over 2 million simultaneous viewers and sold out the 90,000+ seater Camp Nou. 🏟️ This new competition will have teams from the Spanish-speaking countries across the American continent, which is set to begin play in 2024 in Mexico City. Pictured are the 12 new clubs and all their presidents of the Kings Leagues Americas. So why is it so popular? 1. They bring together influencers and professional athletes 2. Mix soccer and entertainment 3. Have a shorter, season-long schedule 4. Bring together amateur, professional, and former star players All which maximise attention, engagement and cater to vast, new young audiences (massive on TikTok!). Provided this league keeps stable operational footing, I have no doubt the popularity of this league is going to continue to soar. Viewership and engagement of sport and football in a particular is a space ripe for disruption. #KingsLeague #Pique #SportsIndustry
