Got to see the Barbie movie yesterday! Some key takeaways: 🦄As Connie mentions below, the franchise made some amazing partnerships in areas in which the brand had little to no influence, including with brands like Airbnb, etc, showing the power of forming relationships with brands in the affinity categories of your audience. 🦄Not much focus was on the toy features but instead on the incredible story behind Barbie, how she was created, why she was created, and where the brand sees a future with its audience included. We got to see a beautiful homage to the creator of Barbie, Ruth Handler which got me all in my feels. 🦄As a millennial, I felt so seen and represented! IMO the marketers and creators did an amazing job appealing to all age groups but they were smart to understand that millennials are the parents of the children who will keep the Barbie brand pushing forward with toy sales, Grade A marketing for sure. 🦄Everyone was dressed up in pink from teenage boys to girls in Barbie gowns, it was beautiful, but behind that is some serious brand activation. The marketing created a movement that everyone wanted to be a part of. All in all, it was one of the best movies I've seen. Having a Latina lead was especially near and dear to my heart but on top of it, the movie had nostalgia, politics, comedy, girl power, pop history and so much more and as a viewer, it intrinsically hit upon everything we crave in a cinematic experience. 10/10

How to sell $1.2M in sunglasses in a single day. Step 1--Set up collaboration between Coach Prime and Blenders Eyewear. Step 2--Have opposing rival coach make snide comments about being respectful and taking off sunglasses and hats when talking to grown-ups. Step 3--Give free sunglasses to athletes and Coach Prime's celebrity friends (The Rock, Pat McAfee, Shannon Sharpe, etc.) reaching their social media community. Step 3A--Reach a national audience by creating a massive frenzy around ESPN's College Gameday--invite Lil Wayne, Offset, Gronk, and other celebrities to join the festivities. Step 3B--Catch eye of coveted college-aged trendsetters. Step 4--Make sunglasses available for presale, ensuring that even though they aren't physically available, they are available for sale. Step 5--Sell $1.2M in sunglasses in a single day.

Multi-generational visit to watch the Barbie Film at the weekend. My 87-year-old mom, 15-year-old son who sat with his hood drawn up for the whole film, my masculine other half Ken, sorry I mean Greg (42), my hugely excitable 10-year-old daughter, oh and me, hold on, you don’t need to know my age. I do wish we’d had the memo about wearing pink though, it was almost as if the Addams family had stumbled into Barbie Land for a few hours. Such a joyful experience, made all the better by the fabulous Everyman Media Group PLC cinema, so joyful in fact I feel a shameless plug for one of my favourite brands coming on… I love this brand. Such plush surroundings, I almost feel like I’ve been transported to Hollywood in the 1930’s when I step inside, amazingly friendly, and attentive staff not to mention great cocktails and food… what’s not to like… Everyman Media Group PLC you have such great “KEN-RGY” (if you know, you know). In the words of Barbie - this was the best day ever…. I wonder if there’s a “Great Customer Service Barbie” in production… Just a thought Mattel, Inc.
