Got to see the Barbie movie yesterday!
Some key takeaways:
🦄As Connie mentions below, the franchise made some amazing partnerships in areas in which the brand had little to no influence, including with brands like Airbnb, etc, showing the power of forming relationships with brands in the affinity categories of your audience.
🦄Not much focus was on the toy features but instead on the incredible story behind Barbie, how she was created, why she was created, and where the brand sees a future with its audience included. We got to see a beautiful homage to the creator of Barbie, Ruth Handler which got me all in my feels.
🦄As a millennial, I felt so seen and represented! IMO the marketers and creators did an amazing job appealing to all age groups but they were smart to understand that millennials are the parents of the children who will keep the Barbie brand pushing forward with toy sales, Grade A marketing for sure.
🦄Everyone was dressed up in pink from teenage boys to girls in Barbie gowns, it was beautiful, but behind that is some serious brand activation. The marketing created a movement that everyone wanted to be a part of.
All in all, it was one of the best movies I've seen. Having a Latina lead was especially near and dear to my heart but on top of it, the movie had nostalgia, politics, comedy, girl power, pop history and so much more and as a viewer, it intrinsically hit upon everything we crave in a cinematic experience. 10/10

today's the day, her release date. i'm looking forward to watching #barbiethemovie later tonight and had been since i first heard of the project. i'm a #margotrobbie fan and think this is a perfect role for her. but i'm also rooting for the success of the movie as a #marketer because it's obvious to all how much work went into this.
🎀 they have FLOODED the market with 100+ partnerships. some that were matches made in heaven, like barbie's dreamhouse as an Airbnb in malibu or as a challenge with HGTV. but i can't deny my favorite was with Impala Skate (and this was before i got a gig promoting the movie & collab in celebration of #pride in the nyc pride parade; oh ya i #rollerskate so #opentogigs 🛼; don't usually get that personal on here but a little press nugget of this barbie).
🎀 and others that gave me question marks (sorry, burger king & ruggable).
🎀 and then there are fun little easter eggs when you search Google, and in Rotten Tomatoes.
🎀 i'd also wary of fatigue though...might need some pepto from all this saturation (still pink though!).
with so much hype, i'm nervous to see if it'll deliver but that tomatometer and audience score are looking pretty fresh 🍅
but this is more than the movie, it's about breathing new life into Mattel, Inc.'s top franchise. and seeing if there's a blueprint here because #hotwheels is up next.
and more than just virality, they've created a cultural phenomena from #barbiecore to countless non-partnered brands riding the wave and cashing in.
but really, what i want...is their marketing budget! 🤑
