CAN WE GET QUALITY WORKMANSHIP? When I went to work for a GC in 1985, fresh out of UT Knoxville, I stood beside a superintendent looking at the brick work performed by WASCO Masonry, at the port cache at the Cascades addition to Opryland Hotel in Nashville. The brick work was outstanding. The superintendent said, “I don’t know what were going to do when these older masons retire”. Throughout my career I have often heard this same question or statement. Buildings get bigger, more advanced, more difficult and the architecture continues to be beautiful. And you know what, the buildings, they keep being built. Here we are again moving on to a new generation of tradesmen and tradeswomen and management staff and we are challenged with another generation of construction workers and managers fast approaching the grand age of retirement. In this construction boom, the need to pass along the work skills is ever apparent. But what is not so apparent is the need to pass along those ever-important relationship skills. We cannot miss the mark of training, coaching, and mentoring our next generation on the significance of respect, the value of creating win-win solutions, being true to your word, and the importance of ethical and fairness when working with clients and subcontractors. Let’s invest in the training needed to move the needle in these areas by emphasizing the importance which means carving out time in the hecticness and allocating the financial resources while cash is flowing. When we do this, we will build on the legacy of great craftsmen and managers that came before us. If you are the founder of your business, then give your next generation this step up in development and growth, so they rise to the next level. Invest today! Wasco, Inc. Construction is a $1.8 trillion dollar industry in the United States, with New York City alone generating approximately 20% of the Gross Domestic Product and providing 10% of jobs and 5% of wages. Although construction activity in New York continues to remain strong, there are many pain points faced by the modern building company that challenge growth, productivity, and profitability. Factors like the rising prices of materials, labor shortages, and inefficient work practices continue to negatively impact the return of investment on projects. Interested in understanding why more and more, construction companies are seeking improved timelines, costs, and workflow efficiencies on their New York jobsites?

Managing Director, Cement & Lime Stabilisation, Plant Hire and Earthworks at Agri Plant Solutions Ltd
Just been sat talking about different jobs over the last 12 months and this one was one of the more interesting ones. 13 metre deep silt lagoon that had been capped off with 2 metres of inhert material. It was like a giant jelly as it wobbled when we tracked over it. We came up with a design to provide a metre deep load baring raft which I’m pleased to say worked. The weather was against us, causing delay after delay but we stuck at it and worked when nature would let us. Stabilisation transformed this site from an area of useless land, to a purposeful area which allowed construction for workshops and offices. Transforming derelict, brown field sites is an area that screams out for stabilisation. Will Sutton and I stuck to that job, wondering when the weather would give us a break. Thanks to Josh Lee and Larc Construction who got us in, very professional company. Thanks to everyone involved at Llynch Plant Hire and for believing in the Process. #stabilisation #remediation #brownfieldregeneration #sustainableconstruction #construction

Myth: Construction is a job, not a career. Reality: Millions of people build their careers in construction every day. Society has said for a long time that construction is just a job. But we don't believe that one bit. There is story after story of people joining the trades and working their way into leadership roles. This story isn't uncommon. And that's what we want to promote as we enter Careers in Construction month. You can build a lasting career in construction. #nniconstruction #construction #commercial

After my first week of self employment, a few lessons learned from my time at Holland Homes under my mentor Thomas Johnson, P.E. have been on my mind: 1. Plan your work and then work your plan - So often we are controlled by whatever problem is demanding our effort the loudest. We fail to prioritize items based on importance but instead spend our days “fighting fires” as they arise. This prohibits us from ever finishing meaningful and important tasks. 2. Be the thermostat, not the thermometer - Don’t let the circumstance dictate how you react. Maintain emotional detachment when tense situations arise and call others up to meet your standards. A calming presence in the construction industry goes a long way. Don’t get rattled. Perform. 3. Attack problems and not people - I have never been a challenger by nature. This ideal gave me confidence to speak with authority and prioritize finding solutions over punishing someone for making a mistake. Aligning the team towards achieving the mission instead of finding someone to blame often quickly reveals a simple solution. 4. Identity is critical - During my time at Holland Homes, our team regularly said, “We’re developers with engineering expertise.” I plan to carry this mantra with me as I continue to build Samford Group. Empathizing with our customers’ priorities will be fundamental to the services we offer. Would love to hear any more advice anyone has to offer! Thinking about building something? Check out samfordgroupllc.com. We would love to be part of your team.
