ACCC announced last Thursday that it was canvassing the views of ordinary Australians as part of its ongoing #supermarkets inquiry, which is investigating whether practices such as price gouging are increasing cost of living pressures. Consumers can be involved by making a submission, or completing an online survey which takes about 10-15 minutes at https://lnkd.in/gBXhxbMq The survey takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Responses to the consumer survey will close on 2 April 2024. “The ACCC is aware of consumers’ concerns about growing costs of living, in particular the price of groceries, and how this is affected by the extent of competition between supermarkets,’’ it says in the issues paper. “We are also aware of consumer concerns relating to confusing and potentially misleading pricing practices, ‘shrinkflation’ (where smaller quantities of a good are retailed for the same price), and data and privacy concerns relating to supermarkets’ increasing use of technology." The group has reported inflation in their sector has 'lessened substantially' with a pre-tax profit jump to £2.3bn, up 159%, and sales up 7.4% at £61.5bn. This comes in part from £500m in efficiency savings with innovative robot-led fresh produce centres and solar panel installations in 100 stores. CEO Ken Murphy highlights improving consumer sentiment and Tesco's commitment to price reductions amidst easing inflation. Consumer group Which? and StepChange Debt Charity are warning the dangers of the loyalty schemes that offer bonus points if customers hit spending targets (from Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco). There is a risk this ‘gamification’ drivers spending consumers cannot really afford. Is this socially responsible? It also drivers #overconsumption and perpetuates many of the #sustainability challenges we face. There is also evidence it isn’t best for business either. Data shared at this month’s Velocity Institute Summit (Charlotte, USA) that targeted product promotions are the most successful way to influence buyer behaviour. Interesting read. Very little competition is never good for democratic-capitalist based economies. For those of us engaged in distribution of group benefits products and services, it is good to be aware of the drivers of what is competing for wallet share at the employee level.
