The U-2 Dragon Lady exits USAF operations after more than 70 years of flying. Located now in central Northern California, Beale's most well-known and long-term resident, the U-2, is in its final years of service. U-2 divestment will begin in late 2025 and wrap up by 2027, marking the end of an incredible career that has lasted far longer than anyone would have thought when the Dragon Lady first took to the skies over Groom Lake in 1955. NASA, however, will likely still fly the U-2 in its ER-2 configuration in very small numbers. RECON: The U-2's missions needed to occur in more permissive airspace, near the edge of the enemy's counter-air reach during a time of conflict. for everything else, especially during peacetime, the U-2 is the ultimate high-flying strategic intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) 'truck.' Read on to see what this means in terms of warfare, battlespace and force structure; and then, what will be its replacements... Can you imagine using the Moon as your cosmic antenna? Picture radio waves soaring through space, ricocheting off the Moon's surface, and returning to Earth. Sound like science fiction? Well, it's not. On this day in 1954, the Naval Research Laboratory (now the Naval Surface Warfare Center) brought this imaginative concept to life with Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) communication, or the "Moon Bounce." Imagine sending a #radio transmission from Earth, having it bounce off the Moon, and catching it right back on Earth with a receiver. This marked a major leap in long-distance, secure communication, revolutionizing operations for the U.S. Navy. It ultimately paved the way to sending messages across vast distances, even from a ground station to a ship far out at sea. It was like having a conversation with someone far away, with the Moon serving as a satellite! But the ripples of this innovation didn't stop at military use. It helped lay the foundations of our modern, interconnected world, uniting people across distances and continents in ways once thought impossible. As we reflect on this tremendous achievement, let's ponder: What 'Moonshots' are we aiming for in our fields? How can we leverage technology to tackle today's seemingly insurmountable challenges? Chime in with your thoughts below, or follow our page for more coverage of remarkable milestones in communication #technology.

"#SpaceForce: We need a #hotline to #China. Direct communications could ward off miscalculation as space militarizes faster than norms develop, officials say." However the #UnitedStates has long sought the establishment of a hotline between the #US and Chinese militaries to avoid strategic miscalculations. But #XiJinping knows how much history, today, the current U.S. administration has forgotten: all past military hotlines with #Beijing proved useless. In the 1999 #Belgrade embassy bombing crisis and the 2001 incident involving a collision between a U.S. EP-3 plane and a Chinese interceptor, Beijing's military leaders simply refused to answer #Washington's phone calls. Although Xi Jinping, at his last summit in San Francisco, agreed to set up a hotline with the Americans, the chances of his generals responding in times of crisis are most likely zero. https://lnkd.in/dFznztUV.
