Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard/Garde côtière canadienne have a key role in the transformation of the Government of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. Partnerships like this are important reminders of our ongoing commitment to building nation-to-nation, Inuit-Crown and government-to-government relationships with First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
Our fishery officers in Haida Gwaii were proud to partner with the Haida Guardian Program in welcoming the Hawaiian Hōkūle‘a’ Canoe and escorting it to Old Masset, British Columbia. This vessel is participating in a 43,000 nautical miles, 47-month circumnavigation of the Pacific by traditional Polynesian voyaging canoes. They will visit 36 countries and archipelagoes, nearly 100 Indigenous territories, and 345 ports. We are pleased to work with our local communities and partner agencies in supporting this important international Indigenous cultural sharing event. https://ow.ly/4uYh50PrTfV

Statia recently joined Saba and St Maarten in hosting the weeklong 4th Dutch Caribbean Heritage Platform. The Statia leg of the programme included tours to heritage sites, including the Dutch Reform Church, the synagogue and Lower Town, as well as workshops and plenary sessions. The SSS islands have a rich heritage that encompasses a blend of Dutch, African, European and Caribbean influences, resulting in a unique cultural tapestry. Heritage plays a crucial role in shaping the cultural identity of communities. By preserving and celebrating their heritage, the people of these islands can maintain a sense of belonging and connection to their past. The heritage of these islands reflects their historical significance as former colonies and trading outposts. Understanding this heritage is essential for gaining insights into the islands' history, including their interactions with European colonisers and the impact of the transatlantic slave trade. #gisstatia #culturalheritage #islandlife #visiting #GettingInFormation

Inspiring meeting with Ambassador Brig. Gen. Anthony Phillips-Spencer. As national anthem illustrates, Trinidad and Tobago independent identity was forged from the love of liberty and progress with watchwords being discipline, tolerance, and production. The idea of a tiny Caribbean island like Trinidad and Tobago venturing into space might seem like a distant dream. However, dreams are what push humanity forward. Launching a space programs always signify a leap into the future, demonstrating the nation's determination to be part of cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements. Trinidad and Tobago inspire its citizens, especially its youth, to pursue careers in STEM fields, driving a new generation of innovators and scientists. Islands are vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and coastal erosion. Space technology provides invaluable tools for monitoring and studying climate change patterns.

The history of St Helena is fascinating and touches many aspects of world history. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, it has since been in British possession, only being briefly taken over by the Dutch in 1633. The island became a port of strategic importance until the opening of the Suez Canal and the advent of steamships. The island’s remote location meant it was used as a place of exile for key prisoners, including some 6,000 Boers, Chief Dinnizulu, Bahraini princes, and Napoleon, who died on St Helena. The Island also played an important role during the abolition of slavery. This heritage provides a significant legacy of fortifications, remains, historic buildings, and what has been described as “the quintessential Atlantic port” - Jamestown. Situated in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, this small British island territory is one of the remotest places on Earth. Until the airport opens in early 2016, the main way for tourists to get to St Helena is by ship, on the RMS St Helena. #AStoryOfBones #StHelena #SaintHelena #Documentary #reclaimingnarratives #historicalinjustice

Yesterday @Potus Joe Biden and @Flotus Jill Biden marked the US return to UNESCO at a White House event. In the tragic international context, this is a strong signal of commitment to #multilateralism, it is also an opportunity to thank and encourage all US civil society partners, artists, thinkers, companies and activists who have supported UNESCO and who are ready to engage and do more in the future. In the most violent crises, we need education, culture, science and information. https://lnkd.in/emA-Feu9

🪞#Cultural Reflection of Heritage Cultural days file through our calendars like an ant army carries life to the colony. Our most recent public holiday in South Africa was Heritage Day. Amidst the sizzling of braai meat and the customary "Happy Heritage Day" chorus, a thought emerged – our role as storytellers. There’s a real thrum to the stories of our continent. We are all Africa's storytellers, and our tales have an indescribable energy. These stories aren't just fireside chats; they're shouts from the roadside, hands flagging down transport, knocks on doors, nods across bustling restaurants, and selfies taken in mid-flight for those who've never boarded. They're also the resonant hum of a struggle song. There’s not just one form through which we tell our stories – sometimes chaotic, often loud, not always tidy, but always subtle. The truth is, countless stories linger beneath the surface of our everyday lives. As Africa's creatives, are we paying close enough attention? Are we delving deep enough? Our job is to unearth the gold and find the meaning in the roughness of the ordinary. Our duty is to tell these stories, not through the lens of sentimentality, but with authenticity. In ways that talk tall. #BeBold #Authenticity #AfricanStorytellers
