Affiliate Marketing Director | Affiliate Marketing Expert | Helping People Achieve Their Affiliate Marketing Goals | Real Estate Lover | Cowgirl
Some people get into an industry/career early on in life and stay there for years. Not me. While I don't anticipate leaving the real estate/affiliate marketing industry anytime soon (if ever) truth is, I just got here a couple years ago. Before this, I worked in education, publishing, and vet med. But you know what? Every industry has proven beneficial in my life both personally and professionally. Yet, my two stints in vet med totaling almost 5 years, was probably the most beneficial. Today, I had to take my Lola to the vet for a lump in her armpit area that I wanted to be sure wasn't malignant. Working in vet med in the past, so many owners simply don't know what to look for, what lexicon to use, etc. and that can make it very difficult for DVMs, techs, and front office staff to effectively communicate. It's not the owner's fault, you don't know what you don't know. But I do know. I've worked it. I've seen it. The DVM was able to talk to me easily and effectively because of my prior experience. And, in turn, I was able to easily understand the diagnosis and prognosis. Luckily, my suspicions of a MCT (mast cell tumor) proved likely false, and a histiocytoma is likely the culprit which makes it a waiting game at this point. My point is, if you have jumped from industry to industry... don't be ashamed of that. You likely know stuff other people have no idea about. You can use this to your advantage. I know I do. Pic of my house hippo / kangaroo (also known as a dog) for tax.

Stress in VET = stress in TECH!? I was recently asked whether the stress and fears in vet med are relatable to the ones in tech. The simple answer is NO. Working in medicine comes with great responsibilities and working in high-stress environment every single day becomes like a second nature to us (but with a great cost!). So transitioning into tech has been a refreshing experience. Don't get me wrong, every job is stressful in it's own way and I'm not trying to downplay that in any way. But what I've experienced that last year is: ▶ I have now time to do my work. In vet med I was constantly running behind time. ▶ I'm not afraid to make mistakes. I made a mistake? No one is dying? Great! My stress levels didn't raise an inch. Instead I have a great opportunity to learn from it, evolve and do it better next time! ▶ It's okay not to know things. I've been working as a QA less than a year and it's absolutely normal that I don't everything. I'm not expected to! Instead this is my time to learn. In medicine even as new grads we have the constant pressure to know absolutely everything (which is impossible btw but nobody tells us that). My fellow career changers, what is your experience and thoughts on stress in different industries?

An employee asked if I was ok today. Me… the Hospital Manager… she asked if I was ok. She told me that the team noticed something wasn’t quite right because I showed up at a team huddle and seemed quite frustrated. How do I respond? What should I say? Do I keep it professional or answer honestly. I decided to answer honestly. I told her I have some personal things, and I’m sorry that side came out. Look, I’m not a dictator Manager. I don’t micromanage. If you want to be on your phone, fine, but our sole priority is patient care. When I’m met with indifference when I’m trying to make our work environment better. When employees don’t take me seriously when I’m being serious and act as if “Alana will be ok with it.” When the responsibilities are listed but nobody bothers because “Alana will do it.” When it is apparent that the overall team doesn’t get the overall mission, which is patient and client priority. When I don’t get doctor support for trying to grow the practice. I get frustrated. I told her this, and I told her she could share it with the team if she wants. Should I have? I have no idea. But I did. Vulnerability at its finest. “Are you ok?” And “Is everything ok”…. 3 very strong words. #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #hospitalmanager #vettech #frustration #areyouok
