📣 Join us tonight for the launch of our new report examining UK public attitudes towards greater and greener development - both in terms of housing & infrastructure 📍 Committee Room 17, Houses of Parliament ⏰ 18:30 - 20:00 🙋♀️ RSVP: https://lnkd.in/eGFSPjrR 🎤 Speakers include: - UK Housing Minister, Lee Rowley - Former UK Environment Secretary, Therese Coffey - Environment Editor of The Telegraph, Emma Gatten - Conservative Environment Network Director, Sam Hall - Bright Blue Senior Researcher, Bartek Staniszewski - LBC Presenter, Ben Kentish (Chair) The event will be used to finalise a major Bright Blue project. In the project, Bright Blue aimed to reconcile two key objectives in housing and infrastructure policy: the socioeconomic (such as more and affordable homes for young people, and more secure and affordable energy) and the environmental (such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving biodiversity). Bright Blue commissioned independent experts to provide original analysis and policy recommendations in two key areas. The first paper examined how to secure more homes, ready for net zero. The second paper considered building resilient neighbourhoods, powered by low-carbon energy.

It's time to clear green belt misconceptions. Given the insufficient urban brownfield land for housing needs, the environmentally sound choice is building on low-quality green belt areas closer to urban centres, according to Simon Vernon-Harcourt from client City & Country. In a recent article in Housebuilder Media, Simon discusses the importance of considering alternative spaces for development that balance housing demands with environmental preservation. Buffalo, New York, is a smaller legacy city leading the way in green regeneration. The municipality’s form-based zoning code, the “Green Code,” integrates New Urbanist principles, equity, sustainability, and climate resilience. Incorporating more than six years of public engagement, the code promotes walkability and density and mitigates displacement. More than 300,000 households have been given access to nature under plans to expand woodlands, a survey has found. It assessed the impact of more than six million trees which have been planted during the last five years as part of the Northern Forest project. The scheme will see 50 million trees planted from coast to coast and around cities such as Liverpool, York, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and Hull by 2043. The report, commissioned by the Northern Forest Partnership and conducted by Liverpool John Moores University, found enough trees had been planted to fill more than 4,000 football pitches. It also found 19,000 tonnes of carbon had been "locked up" by trees planted through the scheme and there had been 7.5 million more visits to woodland each year. #trees #environment #sustainability #climatechange #education #woodlands #carboncapture #forests https://lnkd.in/eBKtJVCd

Enjoying Green Infrastructure Partnership Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) conference on a subject at the heart of my practice. Stewardship. Listening to Lord Micheal Heselitine, reminding us of his work in bringing forward brownfield land for development by garden festivals, derelict land grants and of course the setting up of Groundwork for the regeneration of urban spaces through environmental action. Big ideas. Leadership and putting into place long term legacy mechanisms. What we need NOW is a big commitment and galvanisation to get behind greener- spongier- climate resilient cities using green infrastructure and nature based solutions with the right value and resources to manage long term. With devolved local management and ownership creating a community compact.
