Apple is loosing the spot in world market! 📱 But, Apple is winning in the Indian market! Are we getting fooled?? 🧐 Let’s understand!💡 Apple launched its IPhone 15 series in India in September 2023. The sales for this very model has seen a whopping 100% jump in sales compared to IPhone 14 series on the very FIRST day of sale!! The cheapest IPhone 15 series starts from ₹80k and goes as high as ₹200,000/- 😱 The world smartphones sales are at All time low, but brands are seeing a solid growth in India! Especially APPLE, Which has seen the highest ever YoY growth of more than 34% Apple has shipped more than 2.5 million units in a single Quarter 3 of 2023. It’s a recent trend amongst a lot of millennials and Gen Zs that “You only live once, hence spend as much as you can”. And this very phenomenon has resulted in huge surge in “Discretionary Spending “💰 Not just Apple, but almost all luxury brands have seen a huge surge in Indian market and focusing more and more to capture further share in the same!! But the irony is Indians are spending like hell without considering the after effects of same! For instance, more than 75% of Indians don’t have an emergency fund backing them!🚨 At least 29% of Indians said their salary does not last beyond 15 days! 🚨 And these same people spend more than a Lakh on Products like IPhone! Which are no more than an “Article of Snob Appeal” 🤑 An article which for some people is a symbol of “Higher Status”, which is a worrying fact! Let alone US, India is competing with China, so it consider the Average monthly income in China its USD 4214 And the cheapest IPhone 15 model cost USD 799 Which is around 18.9% of monthly income of Chinese. Whereas, the average monthly income in India is USD 387 (INR 31,900- as per report from June 23), and if taking into consideration the cheapest IPhone, it happens to be almost “TWICE” the amount of total income! 🚨 (Remember, I have used global prices in dollar terms which is much cheaper in the Indian models in Rupee terms). So considering all this, what are we heading to?? A mere layoff can bring the entire family of a well paid IT professional on the verge of bankruptcy! As most salaried class are ignoring to invest some funds for the case of emergency!! In fact even after such a huge pandemic, the health insurance coverage is only up to 37% (Source: Statista) in Indian households! Which in real terms should be part of your “Emergency Fund” 💰 I personally feel, rather than upgrading your IPhone every single year or once in 2-3 years, start by investing just 10% of your total family income as a “Emergency Fund” which should be equivalent to your annual cost of living and recurring payments like EMIs. Life will be much more peaceful if you have an emergency fund in place! I am a "budget hunter". Far from shy to admit that I've resorted to old-school trick to get my hands on an Apple device. To my non-Indian friends - the 1980s trick involved finding that one friend/relative who had that little space in their bag to bring back that one product from the US to India as imports were restricted and Western products weren't available in India. Since 2007, thanks to e-commerce sites, I've easily scoured prices in various countries, painstakingly found unsuspecting friends who have graciously picked up devices where they were cheapest, and then they have transported it back to me with great effort(sometimes the device travelled 3 countries, few cities in India before it got to my hands) and then easily paid them back via our very vibrant payment ecosystem. But @Apple, you finally got the act together, I finally bought my prized possession in India. Like all things Apple, there are often a lot of naysayers at anything the company set its sights on. Same when it came to India, there were so many naysayers who said that Apple would not make headway. Like how India thrives on low cost and Apple price point will not work, so on and so forth. And like the naysayers who are persistent, Apple too is one persistent marathon runner in anything that it does. The naysayers predicted that when Apple went into the watch business, it will not make such headway. Now Apple’s success is simply assumed in that category. Likewise Apple’s growing success in india is a quintessential Apple approach. As i wrote before, Apple respects the scale of any problem then takes a long and hard look at the challenge and thinks of the entirety of processes to get its way. It ignores the naysayers by being focused on what it understands and works at it. It is a no drama, quiet chipping away at the problems until one day the “Jericho wall” falls. India is one of the many examples of the Apple way of winning, a combination of creative vision matched with competent pivot. It works, it just starts out small until all the good foundational factors work in its favor. Having said this, India too has changed, it is increasingly a modern and confident nation. Standards of living have risen and a growing number of cities now frankly look more futuristic than cities in the west, the future is in India.
