Co-founder & CEO @ The ROSTR Group - ROSTR, Jobs by ROSTR, Stack by ROSTR, ROSTR Insider ❊ building tech and content for a more connected music industry
"50% of GRAMMY nominees are independent artists"... but are they really? Yes. But also not where it counts. I saw this stat yesterday and wanted to take a closer look at the numbers using ROSTR data. While "more than half of 2024 GRAMMY nominees" fits when you look at ALL the GRAMMY nominations - the distribution of those independent nominations is very skewed towards the more niche awards. Across the most prestigious awards the indie share is nowhere near 50%... General Field: - Awards: Album of The Year, Record of The Year, Song of The Year and Best New Artist - Total nominations: 32 - Independent nominations: 1(!) - Indie share: 3% Selected Best Album Awards: - Best Pop Album: 0/5 (0% indie share) - Best Dance/Electronic Album: 0/5 (0%) - Best Rock Album: 1/5 (20%) - Best R&B Album: 1/5 (20%) - Best Progressive R&B Album: 1/5 (20%) - Best Country Album: 2/5 (40%) - Best Alternative Album: 2/5 (40%) - Best Rap Album: 2/5 (40%) - Best Latin Pop Album: 3/6 (50%) Overall share for the above album awards: 26% -------------- Overall it’s dope that more independent artists are being nominated and the trend is a positive one (also much better gender balance these days). Also want to stress that getting nominated for any GRAMMY is a huge achievement regardless of it’s one of the more marquee awards. But I think it’s important to also keep an eye on how that ratio is distributed. 1 indie nomination from 32 in the general field sucks. 2 major best album categories having no independent nominees sucks. In the end these are often the awards that get the most TV attention. It’d be cool if we see more independent representation in these categories in future years - because there’s absolutely independent artists/albums who could be up there. ⚠️ this data is pretty rough but directionally correct #musicindustry #grammys #independentmusic
This just in: MORE THAN HALF of 2024 GRAMMY Award nominees are from the independent sector! "A2IM offers its heartfelt congratulations to the independent labels, artists, producers, and songwriters nominated for the 2024 GRAMMYs. Representing more than half of all nominees, these companies and creators are the pulse of musical innovation, touching audiences globally with their diverse works. We honor them for making the music that shapes our world." – Dr. Richard James Burgess MBE, President and CEO of A2IM. #GRAMMYS #RecordingAcademy #IndependentMusic #GrammyNominee

Members Clubs, the honours system and what Blur taught me about the emptiness of 'success' The Garrick club is in the news today because it has finally agreed to let women become members. It got me thinking about members clubs more generally, knighthoods, being a VIP and other external markers of success. And it reminded me of a story about two visits I made to a music festival... Key Takeaways from Aretha Franklin's estate: The lack of a clear Will can lead to family conflict and financial impact. Aretha Franklin’s case serves as a strong example. Without a definitive Will, your estate may face unnecessary legal fees, asset depreciation and tax complications. Seek guidance from an estate planning professional to clarify your estate plan and protect your loved ones.
Aretha Franklin was an icon in the music industry. For her family, Aretha’s passing in 2018 should have been a time to celebrate the artist and mourn her passing. But quickly, a series of estate planning issues emerged that took over the moment. Comerica thought leaders Lisa Featherngill, Andrea Bruce and Steven Zamenski look at the details of Aretha Franklin's estate and lessons we should all take away on the need for a clear Will. https://bit.ly/3WHlhmf 📷: Jan Persson/Redferns/Getty Images #EstatePlanning #ArethaFranklin #Comerica #ComericaWealthManagement #LessonsLearned
