Today starts the season of generosity and giving to nonprofit organizations. The United States of America has 1.5 million nonprofits, according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics. So why do I hope you'll give a little to Mint Artists Guild this season? Their names are Dana, Briza, Moumita Tamara, Jamela, Michael and more. And they learn career and entrepreneurial skills and earn money from their creative work, thanks to Mint.  This year, they'll earn close to $41,000 through creative work and gigs Mint developed - making art, leading free arts and crafts for hundreds of children and creating coloring pages that Mint gives away. Mint has grown every year since 2019, and we didn't slow down for the pandemic. We revved up. Mint also is a generous nonprofit, and every year donates more than 25 original paintings to other nonprofits, large and small- and gives away pieces through Free Art Friday Detroit. We created Art in Windows to promote Black and women-owned businesses and hosted our first Generosity Breakfast this year, with free tickets for 60 nonprofit leaders. And the list goes on. Not bad for a small nonprofit with an annual budget of about $120,000. We need your donation to continue to serve and teach and give back, generously. Fundraisers Turn Gaps Into Intersections and Alignments I along with others have described the role of the fundraiser as that of a matchmaker - matching institutional capabilities and ambitions with donors' convictions and aspirations. While I still believe that to be an apt depiction of how an individual fundraiser works with an individual donor, I see a larger role that fundraisers play working across fields of donors over time. It is one of working the intersections described below. In working those intersections, skilled fundraisers and the advancement teams that support them, are working to bring organizations and donors into closer alignments, where each can see the value of meeting the other halfway so that they can accomplish so much more together. This is much more of an ambassadorial skill with advancement operations playing the equivalent of the State Department within their organization. The more organization leaders see this parallel, empower their advancement operation to fulfill this role and take suggestion from their ambassadors on how to build more amicable and lasting alliances, the more their philanthropic allies will see their futures as inextricably linked.

Philanthropy works to increase opportunity, especially to those historically excluded. The lawsuit against Fearless Fund is an attack on the rights of philanthropic organizations to give in line with their values, as protected under the First Amendment. Attempts to restrict the values-driven work of philanthropy impact so much great work happening around the country and in our region. This would have great consequences for initiatives like the grant we provided to revitalize small-town grocery access for rural residents in North Dakota. I am so honored to have been alongside Brandi Coleman during our third Safe Space Circle with The Lemonade Circle, this time for the amazing women of the The University of Texas at San Antonio Women’s Basketball Team! Every time we host a circle, I am truly left in awe by those in attendance. It takes true courage to be so vulnerable, open, and honest with yourself and those around you, so for that, I thank each and every person who has attended a circle session with us! 💜🍋 During this circle, we guided the team through a series of difficult conversations to help them better understand each others needs, the areas they can improve in, and the ways they can be not just better teammates to each other, but friends. One of the biggest takeaways I had during this circle was the realization that PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE! It was so interesting to hear that despite being apart of a literal team, the same feelings of loneliness and lack of support were shared by a lot of the players. These conversations, despite their difficulty to have, are important, impactful, and EMPOWERING. After each circle, it becomes more and more clear that we need each other, we need our community, we need SISTERHOOD.
