Welcome to the final (unclassified) day of Advantage DoD 2024!     We kicked off with a powerhouse panel on the main stage about the potential of #LLMs and how they are understood in society today. Moderated by our Chief Digital and AI Officer, Dr. Craig Martell, the panel crossed government, industry, and academic perspectives with participation from ScaleAI CEO Mr. Alexandr Wang, founder of Lovelace AI Dr. Andrew Moore, Palantir CTO and EVP Mr. Shyam Sankar, and Dr. Gary Marcus, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Neural Science at New York University.    The discussion included healthy & interesting dissent on the hype around and use of LLMs while providing informative & thought-provoking points for the audience to takeaway. One point all panelists could agree on is that LLMs are only one piece of a much larger picture of operational #AI, with emphasis on investment and evaluation frameworks to continue pushing our advancement forward. Fantastic opening panel discussion on the role of LLM’s to contribute to mission outcomes. Highlighted the value of viewpoint diversity and collaborative conversations, focus on outcomes, and empirical evaluation of technology. Critically important to take pragmatic view of AI tech: it needs to deliver outcomes. Good discussion on where LLL’s fit in our tech solution stacks and the limitations of chat interfaces. Today we started SPADE2024 in Brussels about the value of GenAI for powering Decision Advantage, the ability to make better decisions faster and communicate them Interesting panels and speakers addressing questions like ‘how can AI support decision advantage across Land, Air, Sea, Space & Cyber’ and ‘What are the key challenges to integrate AI into decision making across the domains today?’ Education and trust are most important to get us where we want to be. #trust #speed #whereisthedata

Why is there no significant investment in GenAI in the DoD to date? This panel was a masterclass in the answer… In short, Machine Learning is currently viewed as the more worthy investment so it gets the focus, and GenAI is a wonderful thing for our adversaries to waste their money on pursuing. Agree or disagree, that was the doomer message coming from experts on the panel, leaving only the commercial reps to try and salvage some kind of worth to pursuing the technology in a meaningful way within the DoD. Regardless of the accuracy or validity of either the doomer or proponent narratives from the panel, the fundamental disconnect in strategic viewpoints drives the deprioritization of the technology versus other alternatives. We can want anything for any reason, but unless leadership prioritizes it there is no funding, without funding there is no capability. Leadership isn’t going to prioritize anything if there is not some kind of baseline consensus on the value of a thing to start with. The primary takeaway here is that if you want it, you are going to have to pay for it yourself. Do not look for a free mass GenAI capability for everyone provided from on high anytime soon. Last week, AFWERX and Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC) hosted more than 120 industry, academic and government officials for the Artificial Intelligence Industry Forum. The event, located at the The University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown Campus, aimed to foster collaboration and find AI and machine learning solutions to challenges facing the United States Air Force installation and mission support community. “The biggest benefit of working with AFIMSC is the engagement. They’re able to bring the right people into the right room to talk to industry to solve these types of problems,” said James Foutz, AFWERX Colliders program manager. “They not only learn what the industry solutions are, but they’re very generous with their time to help industry understand the problems facing the installation and mission support community.” During the two-day event, subject matter experts from across AFIMSC presented some of the challenges they’re facing and outlined plans for integrating AI and associated technologies into several mission areas including architecture, engineering and construction. Attendees also had an opportunity to learn about the overarching AFIMSC mission and gain insights into AI technology and perspectives from experts at UTSA and AFWERX.
