All workers – from agriculture to manufacturing and garment industries, from informal, home-based, domestic, to migrant workers, from caregivers, health to platform workers - have all endured the deleterious effects of neoliberal systems and corporate greed for a long time. Workers, especially women workers and women migrants are forced to deal with low-wage work with poor and unsafe working conditions just to survive. In commemoration of the International #DecentWorkDay on October 7, APWLD together with partners and members across the Asia-Pacific region unite together in demanding #DecentWork4All especially to women workers and women migrants. Together, we call on employers and governments to provide #decentwork by providing living wages, ensuring social protection of workers and strengthening workers’ participatory democracy.

New paper alert! ⭕ Advocating for Survival: Domestic Workers in the Necropolitical Regime of the Pandemic https://lnkd.in/dgtYRetG ⭕ During the COVID-19 pandemic, advocating for basic protections has become a matter of survival for domestic workers. ⭕ With the onset of COVID-19, this largely female and immigrant workforce was expected to take on dangerous care duties with little protection against disease and death. ⭕ We apply a necropolitical feminist analysis to expose the underlying logic of the deadly (virus) regime and to highlight how the movement counteracted that logic in the United States. ⭕ I and Elizabeth Pellerito have wrestled to give our analysis of the advocacy part of the activity of the organizations such as Matahari Women Workers Center, Massachusetts Coalition of Domestic Workers, National Domestic Workers Alliance, CA Domestic Workers Coalition, Brazilian Women's Group - Grupo Mulher Brasileira, Dominican Development Center, and many others, during the pandemic a proper theoretical angle. ⭕ At one point we stumbled upon the necropolitcal lense (I rememebr an a-ha! moment after the discussion with Michalina Augusiak on the situation on PL-BY border). ⭕ Necropolitics is basically an analysis of the unequal distribution of the conditions for life and especially, death in society. Sounds familiar? Yeah, so we thought. ⭕ The neo-liberal regime during the pandemic respected and protected some lives more (the middle class, the work-from-home ones, the white) while exposed and neglected others (the working class, large part of the 'essential workers', people of color). ⭕ The organizations have done everything in their power to right the imbalanced and unfair distribution of care and protection, also at the level of law and public policies. We interpret their advocacy work as a matter of survival. ⭕ The paper is out for two weeks now, but it came out when I was down with COVID, hence the delay. Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894 to celebrate the contributions of American workers after labor activists pushed for greater workers’ rights, such as an eight-hour workday and the elimination of child labor. As we honor the workers who keep the country running, it’s important to note that in 2023 working a full-time job still does not guarantee making a living wage and being free from poverty — especially for mothers and women of color. 3wTodos debemos de poner mucho más atención en las Plantas ensambladoras y de manufacturas de las industrias automotriz, autopartes, textil, hulera, aeroespacial, porque si la temperatura ambiente es sofocante, adicional a ello la temperatura que casi siempre es intensa y requiere constante hidratación, no debemos de permitir que las empresas, por ahorro en insumos o por mala administración, expongan a altos riesgos a las personas trabajadoras, ya que debemos garantizarles un equilibrio hídrico adecuado y constante, tomando la cantidad necesaria de agua (entre 2 y 2,5 litros al día como mínimo), a intervalos regulares, procurando beber despacio y a pequeños sorbos, y permanecer en lugares frescos y alejados del calor para adaptarnos poco a poco, por lo que los sindicatos debemos exigir descansos programados para que las personas trabajadoras se hidraten y respiren a temperatura ambiente.
