A few days ago, we took the center stage to share our reflections after six weeks of the Mandela Washington Fellowship Program at Lehigh University, PA, USA.
We were responding to just one question: where are you now? For me, it was vital to backtrack a bit to first share “where I was?”…
While it is true that I enrolled into the program with some strengths and experience,it was clear that I had gaps and areas that needed improvements. I saw myself as an awesome leader to a significant extent unaware of his own strengths and weaknesses. A leader with an excellent but narrow perspective on leadership in business, gender issues, impact, network, PPPs, trade and financing, community service, etc. That’s a picture of who I was.
Now to the question, “where are you now?” I think this exerpt from my response helps to answer rhe question - in part:
“I want you to imagine a new leader with an open mind, a whole new perspective about the leadership in business, gender issues, networking and impact, etc.; a leader who is aware of his strengths and how to leverage them.
Think about that emerging future leader with a clear plan and vision, that person who sees networking as the most powerful human asset for business. Stop imagining! That’s me; and that’s how far I have grown over the last six weeks”.
For me, the next step is clear - returning home and adapting what is adaptable, transferring it to the Liberian context to catalyze the development that is needed on behalf of the Liberian children and people that we serve.
