Toshiba Sojitz Corporation and CBMM have announced the development of a next-generation lithium-ion battery that uses #niobium titanium oxide (NTO) in the anode. The three companies have unveiled a prototype electric bus powered with the new battery, which is said to realise an ultra-fast charge time of around 10 minutes and deliver high energy density. The NTO battery-powered Volkswagen bus has started testing and demonstration operations at CBMM's industrial plant in Araxá, Brazil. By far the world’s largest niobium producer, CBMM is keenly interested in diversifying niobium’s use cases beyond the steel industry and has invested considerably in R&D to that end. The Brazilian company aims to increase its oxide production capacity to 40ktpy from 10ktpy currently, with ambitions for 25% of its revenue to come from non-steel applications by 2030. Project Blue’s base case sees demand for niobium in batteries increasing, although not at the rate envisaged by CBMM. In our base case, oxide applications for chemicals and batteries will account for ~15kt of niobium about 14.5% of CBMM’s expected production in 2034.

It is reported that #Stellantis Group, the world’s fourth largest #automotive group and #CATL, the world’s largest #battery producer, have signed a non binding memorandum of understanding.   According to the memorandum, #CATL will supply batteries and modules of #lithium #iron #phosphate (#LFP) #batteries to #Stellantis Group locally in Europe, assisting Stellantis in the production of #electric #vehicles in the European market. To further support #Stellantis Group's ambitious #electrification strategy and goals, both parties are exploring the possibility of establishing a 50-50 joint venture.   #Stellantis plans to adopt #lithium #iron #phosphate #batteries to improve competitiveness in terms of cost for production of more affordable #vehicles for the middle class.   At present, # Stellantis Group has not disclosed when it will launch #vehicles equipped with #lithium #iron #phosphate #batteries in Europe. We have launched an ambitious plan that includes the integration of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) technology alongside NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) batteries, and “Cell-to-Pack” solutions. Even though LFP batteries are less energy-intensive, they are also less expensive, making them ideal for certain applications such as small and medium-sized cars. In case of Renault Group line-up, LFP batteries will be used in various Renault and Alpine models starting in late 2025. The Cell to Pack (CtP) technology - a world-first for “Pouch” cells! - increases the range of LFP-powered vehicles by integrating more cells, and therefore more on-board energy, into a given space. Thanks to the CtP technology, we have been able to regain competitiveness in term of EV range with LFP vs. Cell-to-Module NCM batteries.   Integrating this into our vehicles in 18 months is a record-breaking achievement. Such a rapid implementation of this plan is not possible alone: in line with our agile and horizontal model, we have worked with LG Energy Solution to localize the entire LFP technology value chain in Europe and significantly increase its competitiveness.   At Ampere, thanks to our solid background, more than a 10 years experience in EV technology, and the choice of the right partners, we are able to implement this kind of quick win solutions. Performance and Safety Enhancements - ⏳Extended Lifespan: Retains over 80% capacity after 10,000 charge cycles, significantly outlasting current conventional batteries. - 🔄Full Utilization: Can be used between 0% and 100% without degrading battery health, unlike nickel-rich lithium batteries which are best used between 20% and 80%. - ⚡Enhanced Safety: Niobium oxide stabilizes voltage, reducing fire risk, and its open crystalline structure allows rapid lithium intercalation, enabling powerful charges without damage. Last year, I ran an extensive study on how battery modules made in the USA may impact our competitiveness with China. Had some major concerns as the Battery cells carry the major cost of the system. So glad, I've been proven wrong. Based on CEA's new report, US cells are cheaper by 27% vs without incentive. That's lower than buying from China (a global leader in Lithium cell manufacturing). And that's just at the cell level. The domestic content incentive is applied to the entire project cost including the development of the project. The US is on the way to becoming a global leader in Stationary Storage deployment and manufacturing. https://lnkd.in/g-xKP6Z3
