WHOOSH: Southeast Asia’s first high-speed railway set to begin commercial operations. The 142-kilometer high-speed rail line, officially named WHOOSH – which stands for time-saving, optimal operation, reliable system in Indonesian – runs on electricity with no direct carbon emissions and travels at a speed of roughly 350 kilometers per hour – cutting travel time between Jakarta and Bandung from three hours to under less than an hour. It was initially expected to be completed in 2019 but has faced multiple operational delays as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as land procurement and ballooning costs. Highways Director General of the PUPR Ministry, Hedy Rahadian, shared that the land acquisition process is currently underway in collaboration with the State Asset Management Agency (LMAN). Anticipated to commence next year, this toll road access project aims to further enhance connectivity in the region. The momentum for this project received a significant boost as the Cabinet Secretary Minister proposed its inclusion on the National Strategic Project (PSN) list. Once approved, the land acquisition process will be expedited, allowing LMAN to provide the necessary financing. The government's recognition of Whoosh high-speed railway as a PSN, with its remarkable speed of 350 kilometers per hour, promises to revolutionize travel. The Jakarta-Bandung route will be reduced from three hours to a mere 40 minutes, fostering increased mobility for both passengers and cargo. This transformative high-speed railway, spanning 142.3 kilometers with elevated structures and tunnels, strategically stops at four stations: Halim, Karawang, Padalarang, and Tegalluar. The positive impact on economic competitiveness is undeniable, and the railway has already proven its significance with 352,000 passengers transported since commercial operations began on November 14, 2023. Jakarta to build its third MRT line Japan has provided a loan totaling JPY 140.699 billion, which equals to IDR 14 trillion to Indonesia for its Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) East-West Corridor project. The MRT's north-south route, which was introduced in March 2019 with Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA), has emerged as a crucial transportation infrastructure that supports economic activities and the daily lives of the citizens. The new east-west line and comprehensive rail network will further alleviate traffic congestion, enhance the investment climate, reduce environmental impact, and tackle climate change. In addition, the construction of the East-West Corridor MRT project is expected to provide the same level of safety, punctuality, and convenience as the existing line, allowing more people to access public transportation. The Japanese Embassy in Jakarta explained that Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) will be applied to this project, and Japanese technology will be used for the construction of underground tunnels, rolling stock, and signaling systems. https://lnkd.in/e-BHQ6rX

The Indonesian government will work with state-owned China Railway Group to conduct a joint study on extending the Jakarta - Bandung High Speed Railway (HSR) project to Surabaya in East Java, according to a statement by the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry. The distance between Jakarta and Bandung is just short of 143 km, barely justifying the implementation of a railway system capable of carrying passengers at 350 kph (and with a design speed of 420 kph). Only the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had issued a study for extending to Surabaya (730 km from Jakarta). In Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, a crucial meeting took place with the participation of the Director General of Railways. During the event, prospective locations and opportunities for further cooperation in the transportation sector were highlighted. Concrete plans for implementing joint projects aimed at modernizing and improving railway infrastructure were discussed within the dialogue. Special attention was given to the role of innovative technologies in the transportation industry. In this context, the UST transportation technology was presented. The UST transportation technology is capable of optimizing traffic flow, enhancing the efficiency of transportation networks, and reducing the burden on road infrastructure. Representatives of the ministry expressed readiness for fruitful cooperation in the implementation of the advanced UST transportation technology to enhance transportation infrastructure and ensure the sustainable development of urban and regional transportation systems. Transportation infrastructure is one method for boosting a country’s economy by lowering costs or increasing speed and convenience. Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail (HSR) is one of the overdue initiatives that could have been done much earlier to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the two major cities. Still, it better be late than never. It is the first milestone in the 750 KM HSR project; the economic effect could be small in the short run but is expected to be enormously impacted when the four major provinces on the Island are connected. This reminded me of how the PLUS highway contributed to Malaysia’s rapidly growing economy in the late 80s and 90s. However, the setback is that the rapid effect has reached its peak and is already in the downgrading stage due to the overloading repercussions. The so-called north-south expressway is now known more as a “snail way” or a “blockage way”, especially during the festive season. Without a new transport system to increase domestic velocity, we risk replicating Jarkata’s long-standing congestion problem, and the domestic economy will remain sluggish until the next silver lining occurs. #MoT_Malaysia
