A long-time Vortechs Automation client had an antiquated effluent monitoring system that needed an upgrade.   The Automation Direct P1000 PLC turned out to be a great choice for this project.  Small but capable, it had the features we needed for a seamless upgrade.  This PLC gets data from an existing Siemens Multiranger flow meter and from a new YSI IQ SensorNet Controller.  Both of these devices communicate via Modbus with the PLC but their serial parameters are different.  Luckily the P1000 PLC has two built-in serial ports that can be used for Modbus so integration was not a problem.  The next step for this project will be control dosing pumps. #vortechsautomation #siemens #effluentmonitoring #foodandbeverage #ysi #automationdirect -Posted by OneUp

With the help of Kevin Jones and the team at Advantage Industrial Automation, we upgraded a Schneider Electric Quantum PLC to #M580 for a customer this weekend. This was Phase 1 of a multi-phase upgrade. This phase included upgrading the application from Proworx32 to Control Expert, installing the new M580 processor, removing the S908 RIO system, and replacing the ModBus Plus communications with ethernet. Future phases will include replacing both of the Quantum IO remote racks with x80 IO and tidying up the cabinets. Using this phased approach: - Reduces downtime - regardless of system size, changing out the communication cards and installing the plc only takes a few hours. It also saves future downtime; as older parts get harder to find, upgrading allows you to move to a modern, supported system with parts usually on the shelf. - Reduces troubleshooting time on startup - no wiring is changed, so any issues during startup are limited to the plc application or communications. - Allows returning to last known good configuration - If production needs change and you need to get running ASAP, you can easily swap the old processor back in and have the system running as before in minutes. - Helps with budgeting both time and money- by not having to do it all at once you can spread the cost over a longer period of time. It also allows you to swap out smaller parts of the system so you can do it over multiple short outages instead of having to plan a longer one.
